I finally got to try a Silhouette! 2 actually!!
Last week I visited many shops as I was travelling for business so I could test drive various models and necks. Nobody had a Silo.

Oddly enough, I went into one of the LOCAL guitar shops to look at amps and there on the wall was a SUB 1, an Benji, a Silo w/ piezo (rosewood neck) and Silo Special (maple neck).
My jaw dropped since this shop wasn't listed on the EBMM website as a dealer. After talking to one of the gentlemen working there, I figured out that they are sort of a satelite shop for a dealer a couple of hours away.

Needless to say, I was estatic and ready to plug in! Even though I was interersted in the Silo Special, I played them all. Funny enough too, I was leaning at purchasing the SS for the SSH pickup combination (probably mass programming from other guitar manufacturers) but when I tried the Silo with HSH, Whooo!
Did I ever love the sounds coming from that. The pickup at the neck position was a little weak. I think I read this is due to 24 frets. But the next 2 pickup combinations over were just beautiful. ;)

I was also leaning towards the maple fret board (mostly for looks). I've had guitars with rosewood and wasn't too happy. Well I think it was the guitar and not the fretboard. This Silo was just sining to me.

One thing I found weird was that out of all the EBMMs that I tried at all the stores, the action was always better on the rosewood guitars as opposed to the maple one. I am guessing it's just a weird coincidence. Also the rosewood "appeared" to be flatter than the maple. Just my eyes playing tricks on me I'm sure.

I cannot tell you how pumped I am! All I have to do now is decide on the colour I want and place my order!!! :D :D

Also to add to my excitement, this was the first time I was able to play other guitars which I was previously considering for purchase, side by side with the EBMMs.
I won't name any brand names as to not embarass them. ;)
However, I will say this:

NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Silo or Silo Special.
I'll probably try them again and again and again to make sure. ;)

LOL!
I don't have any guitars currently.
I sold them all when my daughter was born 10 years ago. I wasn't really playing them so opted for the cash.
For the last year and a half I've been hanging around here and other site trying to decide what to buy. Went through the usual brands but wasn't happy until I came across the Music Men! You've heard the story over and over.....
So the idea was to buy that one special guitar to suit almost all my needs, and of course I've found it!

I have no problem being addicted!
I also have no problem giving them my money. I know they're worth every penny and more! ;)

As far as little stores, it's actually a small chain. The place is such a dive inside that I would have never have guessed they'd carry the brand.
The other local shop that's a dealer is a larger chain but they only bring in a few EBMMs a year (lots of basses though).

I'll be going back there this week! :D

fogman,
What color was the Silo??? My Morse hasn't even thought about arriving yet but I'm G.A.Sing big time for a Silo with piezo and rosewood fb... non matching headstock would be a bonus, I'm not much for the painted headstocks.

thanks,
fred

Oddly enough I don't remember exactly! I'm pretty sure it was black with either black pearl or python or black ice pickguard!? I was trying to remember this exact thing last night!

The Silhouette Special was sunburst with matching headstock.

Fred,

I went back to play the Silo.
It is black w/ black pearl pickguard, natural headstock, and piezo with no trem.

Man, that's my first exposure to piezo! That is sooo cool. :p They didn't have a PA or acoustic amp so we played it through a small fender amp. If that's how it sounds on a regular amp, then that is exciting. I cannot wait to hear it on a PA or acoustic amp! I hope the salespeople didn't notice the drool coming out of my mouth. That would be embarrassing!

Also, I must say. The EBMM website doesn't do these guitars justice as to how nice the fit, finish, and quality really are in person. Simply marvelous!!!

fogman,
Yeah, the piezo is definitely a must have for at least one of your guitars. I have it on my JP and love it. Besides sounding great on its own, you can blend the piezo into the magnetic output and come up with some really nice fat tones.

The Silo that I get will have the piezo option as well. I thought about trading the JP for one of the new Buttercream Silo's, but I think I'll keep it. It definitely has a place for certain things. I'll probably wait and see what EB comes up with next year for the limited edition stuff before I decide what to buy, but if one of those rare sparkly Silo's comes along with the right options (rosewood, piezo...) I might be tempted to jump on it. Check that I will jump on it.

thanks,
fred
