This thread makes me sad. I just sold my 2003 BMW M3 coupe about a month ago so my wife could have a new Toyota minivan to haul our daughter and all the stuff that goes with her around. The M3 was 330 hp and by far the best handling car I've ever driven. Plus, the E46 was the last BMW body style I truly loved. I know they're selling a lot of the new ones, but those designs do nothing for me. Maybe they'll grow on me like the Bongo did, but I doubt it.
I miss that car.
Why they ever hired Chris Bangle, I will never understand. Having said that, I wish I could afford one of the new 335i coupes.
There is something wonderful about those things, isn't there? A huge, black Regal blowing the doors off almost anything on the road. Sounds like a giant Hoover vacuum at wide-open throttle, too. I need to stop talking about cars now, because I'm broke.

I drive a bangled 330i and while the looks are either love'em or hate, I friggin love this car. It absolutely chews up the twisties on the kancamangus highway in New Hampshire
And it gets plenty of comments from the girls Ive dated as well

A big +1 on that. Although I must admit the styling of the new Z4 M coupe turned my head in a good way, at least in the pics, and it's got the same engine as my old M3. I still haven't seen one on the street though.
Believe me, I know. I'm just waiting to see what sort of goodies EB has in store for us next year (one single H Bongo 4 w/rosewood neck, please?). My wife also promised that the next car purchase will be mine. It'll be a while, but I will seriously consider getting another E46 M3 at that point. That was my second BMW and my second M3 (I had a '97 E36 M3 sedan before that). I'll also probably look at a used M5, if I can find a good one in the prior body style. I don't like the styling of the current version, but the earlier ones are great. It gives me something to daydream about for a few years, anyway.

Before the M3s I drove a Honda Prelude for 11 years and 153,000 miles. Most reliable car I've ever owned. I also love the Honda S2000 convertible. Nothing wrong with Hondas.

Hey, don't dis the Civic!
I had two 89 Honda Civic hatchbacks in a row, drove 'em a total of something like 350,000 miles.
They were the best cars I've ever owned. Lovely little jewel of an engine. First SOHC 16-valve motor ever offered AFAIK. If they still made the exact same model I'd buy one in a second.
I drove one of them on the track (time trials). Did pretty well, too.
Got 35 mpg routinely.
Carried all my crap with ease.
Cost almost nothing to maintain.
They were a BLAST to drive, especially the second one, on which I upgraded the suspension (lowered it an inch and stiffened it).
Here's the key: These cars were fun to drive ALL the time, every day. An overmuscled car can sure take your breath away, but how often do you get to do that? And how much are you spending just to be able to chirp the tires in third gear?
Cheap. Fun. Practical. What's not to love? Status symbols are overrated IMHO. Fancy cars are great for impressing girls, but once you're past that...fun is where it's at, man.
Having driven race cars, I know that it's WAY more fun to drive a slow car at its limit than it is to drive a fast car at YOUR limit. In the first case you're the master and are having fun all the time. In the second case you're just playing with disaster.

Heck, I drive a '96 Chevy extended cab truck with 124,000 miles on it. I love good cars, but my budget doesn't equate with my desire. Doesn't matter anyway, basses are what's important!

I'm not really embarrassed...I enjoy that little Civic. It was for my wife & I was driving a Pilot (we like Hondas in our house), but since my wife works at home & I have a ~32 mile round trip commute every day, we decided to switch since the Civic gets MUCH better mileage than the Pilot. I can still fit all of my gear in it & I'm getting about 27-28mpg in the city.
Ben, you're bringing back memories...I had a '97 Chevy pickup. I bought it new in 1997 & traded it in in 2003 with 207,000 miles! That was the most dependable vehicle I'd ever driven.

I like American cars and engines - really practical over here in the UK when you look at the cost of fuel... : (
Had an old Jeep Wrangler (4.0L) for a while for playing around off-road.
And replaced that with a Jensen Interceptor - English classic car with Yank oily bits and the Chrysler 440 v8 engine - sounded spectacular - thirsty as hell though. So much fun to drive...
Had to sell it earlier this year when I bought a flat - either sell the car or some of my guitars...
so the Jensen went. I was really sad to see it go ...

Wow, this would be a beautiful guitar....too bad it has that ugly ass "j@ckson" lookin' headstock. Totally ruins the classic vibe.
