Dave,

With Clapton, it's the phrasing, man.

Check out his "From the Cradle" disc. He just covers a bunch of blues standards, but he does so brilliantly. Take a track like "Motherless Child" (not to be confused with "Motherless Children" which Clapton also recorded).. this track is as barebones as it gets, yet Clapton delivers it with poise and grace.

Steve, on your recommendation, I will check him out.

Thanks.

Dave

every musicians has something to offers, please don't judge them with any 'standarization'...i don't care how much 'SLOW' or 'FAST' they can play.. and I don't care on how they can change the way of people playing...man ..I just want to enjoy their music..and if it feels good to me then i will say 'it works for me' but if it's not , maybe it's not the right style for me..

it's very important to ask yourself some questions ... can I play like that? can I play slow enough ? or can i play that fast? or can I play a music so people can smile everytime they hear your playing?.. and so on.

just remember there's no genuine players in this world.. just learn and take as much as you can and be happy with it :)

peace bros.

iam well aware of what a muscian is and the that speed is immaterial to greatness. iam 18. i wasnt around in claptons time. i dont own any cream albums or any of his work. im not knockin the guy. its an opinion on what i have heard from him. i have asked myself all of these questions and worked on all these elements.

if you have ever watched or listen to any guitarist that uses speed as an emotional tool to their playing you will see that they are just as soulful has gilmour and clapton. they just choose to spit there emotions out with 40000 notes instead of 40. :D

Though you exaggerated your point maybe just a little
(which was a good touch of humor actually)
I have to agree with you ...
Speed or Shredding does not negate a guitarist's soul from his playing...

Point in fact: We all love "Too Many Notes" by Steve Morse...:)

For those that haven't noticed, Jake was attempting some humor. The video is obviously sped up. I know Jake. Trust me. He knows how good Petrucci is. I thought it was funny.:p

Watch these videos. Warning!!!! These are all joke videos.

JP is the SPEED KING

JP gives some great info.

Well, I'm not sure why this is important. I mean, what does being able to play like a guitar-giant have to do with their impact? I'm probably just misunderstanding you. I mean, usually, the answer will be: "No, I can't play like Clapton, Hendrix, etc.".

I'm just saying Clapton's playing, to this point, hasn't impressed me. It's just an opinion.

Peace!

Dave

sure bro Dave there's nothin wrong with that :) . and my statement it's not directly to you or anyone, it's more personal opinion for me in order to encourage
myself without being worry that people will judge me base on my playing..i Just want to play as i can play.

peace. :)

sure man, to play fast it's important too, but in my humble opinion to play fast it's only a small part of composition. i just can't imagine if i have to play 40000 notes on every measures of my music...it doesn't work for me ..gosh.

when i am try to play or write songs I always remember my friend, bro Ron Thal says :

Advice... don't focus on your hands - they are the voice of what is in your heart, your head, your spirit - hands are not the source of music, the other things are. If you challenge those other things, it will challenge your playing :)

i think that's the best advice i've ever got from a fellow musicians.

peace.
