I've been on the hunt for a Telecaster style guitar the past couple of months, something with that spank and twang you just tend not to get with other instruments. Unfortunately EBMM don't seem to make such a beast, I guess the Albert Lee is about the closest but they are like hens teeth in the UK (my main EBMM dealer doesn't stock them because they are "too ugly!!!", I agree they are a bit of an acquired taste). Anyway I digress,

This hunt has taken me through at least 50 different instruments from Fender Highway1's through various custom shop models, Through G&Ls, Roberts plus too many others to mention.

Unfortunately, although some of these did sound Ok none of them came close to the playability of my Axis Supersport. The Supersport has completely spoiled me the neck is simply spectacular and I was not prepared to accept an instrument with inferior playability to the ASS.

Anyway yesterday I found my perfect Tele, the neck is stunning (an equal to the ASS) fantastic tone and faultless build quality. The instrument I bought was a Suhr Chambered T with flame maple top. However the price of competing with the EBMM playability was over £2000, almost double the price I paid for the ASS.

So there you go you can (IMO) equal EBMM but it really does cost you!!!

To get my ultimate tele sound I took a USA tele and put a duncan JB at the bridge. Is was worth it to me to try a few different pickups to get the sound I was looking for.

Wait until forum member DaveB returns from his holiday in Barbados, then give him a yell at machinehead.co.uk -- Dave personally owns an Albert Lee or two and he'd most likely let you try one of his if you can make the pilgrimage to machinehead.

Plus I think he has a 2006 Limited Edition Albert Lee in stock.

I am in Barbados but there are two ALs in store.

A 2006 LE and a SSS with piezo.

www.machinehead.co.uk - or ring and ask for Ant or Tim.

I'm back in on the 21st.

More EBMM guitars in stock than any shop in the UK, we have great coffee too - well worth the trip.

Hi Dave.

Thanks for the response, and get on that beach.

I am actually fixed up now with the Suhr I mentioned in the opening post, though it is an Xmas present for myself and I am not playing it until the 25th :(

However I would love to try a Lee at some point. My sister in law lives not a million milles from you ( Farnborough way) so next time we are down that way I will check out your site and may make a slight detour.

I've got to admit I was not too keen on the Lee's looks initially but it has grown on me somewhat.

Well, Suhr makes nice guitars, to be sure. But I wish you had tried the Albert Lee before ordering! It has tone like no other. I used to think it looked a little crazy/retro too, but now I love the shape. And having played one, I really appreciate its virtually perfect balance.

I have it squarely on my 'must have' list.. as soon as the folks in San Luis Obispo slow the flood of new things that I can't live without! :)
