Hey all!

No, this is not a thread about the Bongo 6. BP's already put that to bed.

This is about a video I had the pleasure to see from this past September of Mike Portnoy giving a tour around Avatar Studios where they are recording their next record and what should I see at JM's bass station, but what appeared to be (2) SR4's and an SR5! This is a very happy thought for me, in that, it would be VERY nice to hear some EBMM tone on a DT record, replacing that Yamaha that I never really cared for. Good things to anticipate! :D

I'm no Dream Theater expert (far from it, in fact), or anything, but I was under the impression that Myung used SR4s and 5s to record most of the early DT albums.

I saw them WAY back (Images and Words Tour) and, if I remember right, JM played MMs for most of the show (I think it was right when he was landing his Yama deal - and long before the sig model)

He used a SR on When Dream & Day Unite and parts of Images & Words before switching to a 6 string. A Tobias was his first 6er, but he didn't play it for long before switching to a Tung. The Tung was used on Awake and A Change of Seasons. The Yamaha JM sig made its first appearance on Falling Into Infinity and has been used on every album and tour since. The 2nd incarnation of his signature bass first appeared on Train of Thought. I have heard, though, that parts of Octavarium were recorded with a SR5 so it wouldn't be too surprising if he used it again. I also believe that his love of MM is why his new signature Yamaha has a MM style pickup. I know it has been said that the Bongo 6 has nothing to do with JM, but I wonder if he will make the switch anyways. This is my first post, BTW, but I have lurked here quite a bit. I love the EBMM forum!

Yeah, I was aware of him playing a MM in the very early years but I thought that he played the Yamahas exclusively today. Well, anyway, Maybe JP is throwing some good vibes his way! :)

Welcome from deep in the pine forests of South Mississippi, Double Agent.

With a name like that, did I know you in my former life?

John Myung's SR4 on WDADU was pretty crazy too, he got another pickup added onto the neck that he used Rickenbacker style, sending the neck pickup clean and the bridge pickup to an effected channel. Pretty crazy stuff!

He used an SR5 on some tracks off of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, which is when he remembered how FTW EBMM is in general, and why the RBXJM2 has the big MM-style pickup.

Personally, I hope John goes towards a Bongo 6... I like his Yamaha, they're cool and all, but an EBMM would just sound so much better, like on the albums he's used them on. I hope the new album features plenty of SR5-age.

And for what it's worth, John used a Spector on the Images & Words recording sessions.

In light of Big Poppa's comments on six string basses...

Here is the resaon why no six string basses. RETAIL. There are only so many hooks on the wall. The only way we would make a six string is if an important endorsee required one. Much like the silhouette bass was made for Keith Richards. Thats it I have nothing against the 6 string bass, but the market is very, very limited

I'd love to have that conversation.

I think BP's cable went out, and he can't go golfing, so he's amusing himself like a cat plays with a mouse before eating it. :D
