He's been keeping it quiet.

But he has a little secret.

It involves a very special instrument that.....well, John? Would you like to share your secret with the rest of the class?

(It's okay. BP knows. Heh heh.)

John might well be posting his own version as I type, but here goes the condensed version.

Ray Duke won the Silo at the Bongo Birthday Bash.

He thought it was great! He thought it was cool! He had no idea what to do with it!

John had a DD SR5 HH on order with VBTC.

They got to talking. Ray figured he would get more use out of a Stingray 5 than he was getting out of that Silo. John, no fool, said, "Well, maybe we should talk."

Long story short, John Strangeglow has the extremely rare Dargie Delight Silo in his possession.

Everybody wins!

You'd need to talk to my widow about it. This bass isn't going anywhere. I had little idea what to expect, but it felt like a good idea. And I heard BP had ripped it up on it in Dallas.

Finally got back to Austin last night from New Orleans and had to plug it in. Didn't matter that I had been driving for 9.5 hours and it was now 2am. Fortunately, I bought a Phil Jones Bass Buddy not too long ago. On go the headphones.

It's an amazing instrument. It was strung E-E, basically a guitar an octave down. I'm impressed with how solid the low E is. and the tone in the upper register is crystal clear. I think I could make guitar players cry.

The short scale makes it feel like a sportscar. The tight string spacing will take a little getting used to. I used to play a fair amount of fingerstyle guitar and that technique seems to work well. Never could make a pick do what I wanted it to. Still trying to decide if it goes back to A-A. Seems likely, but it's fun in E-E.

The thing is stunning as well. Absolutely stunning. Who knew when we sat in Jack's kitchen whining about the lack of green basses that they'd look this good. Even better than I imagined.

So thanks, to BP, Dargie, and everyone else at EBMM. And thanks to Jack for suggesting I ask Ray about the Silo.

Octopus? I thought first of the echidna.

But octopus works too.

Tiff was here when the DD Silo arrived, and we (we = me) wasted no time in pulling it out and making odd noises with it. An instrument tuned A-A? You should have seen my face when I hit a big G major chord on it.

I probably looked like I myself had an echidna in my shorts.

John has a habit of utilizing odd instruments in interesting ways.

Did I mention he was considered for a Grammy?

Cheers, John!

Thanks BP. Any pointers on ripping it up with this thing? Which tuning do you prefer? There's definitely magic in this thing. Just going to take a while to dig it out.

He was too busy ordering the take out food while taking credit for the excellent take....

I actually like all tunings B-B is fun too. It is a perfect instrument for me as I can play inbetween the guitarist and the basists.

The more I play this thing, the more I like it. Could be the perfect thing for trios as well. Hold down a little bass. Comp a little behind the soloist. Only have to split the tip jar 3 ways. All beautiful things.

I'll have to get Jack to teach me those about theose "chord" thingies I hear so much about.
