I would say that if nobody wanted used MM guitars, nobody would probably want new ones. So there is an indirect benefit to MM by having their guitars valued on the used market. The more people playing MM the better, regardless of how they (legally) acquired them.
Also, to me it seems like buying a guitar just to prop up a specific company is not what it's all about. Finding the right guitar for you, new or used, is the deal.
As for which sounds better? I have to agree that there is no reason an Axis has to sound different than an EVH. Although, as EVH's age, there should be more and more of a difference between NEW Axis' and EVH's. My EVH is 14 years old now. I would have to think there is some difference between it and an Axis fresh off the line.
I do notice a feel difference between the two and always have. That's not to say one is better. It's just to say that you could easily prefer one over the other because of the subtle feel differences.
