I played alot of basses. But I can't find the right one.. I had a stingray and loved it except for its frets which were in bad condition which is why I sold it. But I never got to use it in a band. I play in a band at my church by the way.
I then bought a sterling and loved it untill I played it at church. It was way growlier than the stingray, but in a bad way. I could never sit in the mix I always stood out and it just didn't fit in.
So I felt a precision would be the perfect bass for the type of music I played. Well It did provide the sound I was looking for but its missing something. I just can't dig in like I did with my sterling/stingray or well it sound like crap when I do.
I tried a jazz bass and do like SOME of them. I can't explain why some just sound like they wouldn't fit in a band all that well.
And my true love the stingray, there is a chance it could work I think. Because it sounds much better than the sterling in a mix to me.
One thing I haven't been digging lately is active basses they always have this boost on the REALLY high freqs. Even if you cut the treble its going to be there, its like this on all active basses.
One of the main reasons I don't want to get a stingray is actually stupid but, the way it looks. Sure it looks awsome but it just doesn't have that classic look, due to the pickup placement it looks too agressive. Thats about the only thing I like about the precision, the classic sunburst look.
I tried so hard to love precisions but they never do it for me. I love the look of them and I really do like punk rock/pickplaying and Im trying to get my church to go in that route because its awsome. I think one of the main reasons Im haveing so many problems is that my favorite type of tone is a stingray played hard with nice riffs, but the music I play calls for a Precision with the tone rolled off.
I know you guys can't give me the answer about what Im looking for. I would try the stingray in the band but I would have to sell my P to get it and the band already makes me feel like a gear whore for haveing a new bass every week.
By the way I don't like bongo's either or Double pickuped stingrays, but it may be the only option..
