I played alot of basses. But I can't find the right one.. I had a stingray and loved it except for its frets which were in bad condition which is why I sold it. But I never got to use it in a band. I play in a band at my church by the way.

I then bought a sterling and loved it untill I played it at church. It was way growlier than the stingray, but in a bad way. I could never sit in the mix I always stood out and it just didn't fit in.

So I felt a precision would be the perfect bass for the type of music I played. Well It did provide the sound I was looking for but its missing something. I just can't dig in like I did with my sterling/stingray or well it sound like crap when I do.

I tried a jazz bass and do like SOME of them. I can't explain why some just sound like they wouldn't fit in a band all that well.

And my true love the stingray, there is a chance it could work I think. Because it sounds much better than the sterling in a mix to me.

One thing I haven't been digging lately is active basses they always have this boost on the REALLY high freqs. Even if you cut the treble its going to be there, its like this on all active basses.

One of the main reasons I don't want to get a stingray is actually stupid but, the way it looks. Sure it looks awsome but it just doesn't have that classic look, due to the pickup placement it looks too agressive. Thats about the only thing I like about the precision, the classic sunburst look.

I tried so hard to love precisions but they never do it for me. I love the look of them and I really do like punk rock/pickplaying and Im trying to get my church to go in that route because its awsome. I think one of the main reasons Im haveing so many problems is that my favorite type of tone is a stingray played hard with nice riffs, but the music I play calls for a Precision with the tone rolled off.

I know you guys can't give me the answer about what Im looking for. I would try the stingray in the band but I would have to sell my P to get it and the band already makes me feel like a gear whore for haveing a new bass every week.

By the way I don't like bongo's either or Double pickuped stingrays, but it may be the only option..

This isn't true.

I wish I had some great audio clips to prove this, but I do have some youtube footage my pal Strangeglow shot a while back:

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Active bass - VERY active, in fact, at 18 volts. You hear any high-end sizzle? Answer: no, you do not.

Why? I use flats and EQ my rig to produce old school thump while maintaining a rather modern PUNCH.

See what you think.

There are secrets out there, Spencer. I know some of them.

you say 'gear whore' like it's a bad thing....

I have been a long time fan of 2-band Stingrays.

I recently picked up a nice sunburst SR4 HS that is just knocking my socks off.

Thats what Im looking for, thump but punch. I might try it but I don't know if I will like it. And I do like the sound of roundwounds with a pick or heavy digging. All I know is the P just isn't cutting it.

No I know what im talking about, who knows maby I have super human hearing. Active basses has more highs than passive. Take a Marcus Miller Jazz Play it in passive hit the active switch and play it, you will hear extra high noise. If you cut the treble it takes away the the highs but there are still electric noises that pass through. Same with a stingray sterling, bong ect.

I guess I should leave that variable out because it is about impossible to hear with any other instruments playing.

I do not subscribe to your generalization, but will not argue the point - your ears are yours alone.

A Stingray is yourr likely fix... Strings and amp will factor into your tone... Since you're not into the dualies, a Sterling may give you a bit more tonal options, but the neck is closer to a Jazz than a P.

For me, it'a all thump and punch... And some whump...

I did hear it and its a nice tone but not what Im looking for, for church of coarse. But bassmonkee's is what im looking for in church. But Im assuming he is useing flats? Because I also want to be able to play with rounds depending on the song type.

Did you see the mute? That will work with rounds too. I happen to play flats but...

I would play my SR5 or Bongo 5 H in church any Sunday.

Did I miss what amp and cabs you are using?

I happen to know one of these don't sizzle at all.

right now I am useing a 1001rb-2 GK head with 2x10 avatar at my home and a b1-r+1x15 at the church. If I eventually get to play on wends too [right now I just play sunday nights] I will get a GK 8x10 and bring my head or a full Ampeg SVT Classic 8x10 and head.... Im really into stage presence/jumping off of stuff ect.

Only for the youth of course. Im 18 myself...

I guess Im a punk bassist at heart but get too bored with their simple basslines unless I get act out on stage, and who loves the tone of a P bass and pick but never gets to use that tone and even if he did probably wouldn't like it..

Yea I know.....
