I know Dargin tried all kinds of pickguards and the black was the universally accepted default pickguard for the Dargie Delight, and it's hard to argue with it - it looks good, even to someone (me) who's into the more esoteric pickguards.
But of course we HAVE to experiment with the pickguard colors. It's what we do.

Do you have a Bongo? If it looks like you have to take the strings off to change the pickguard, you shouldn't be messing with pointy tools in the first place.![]()
The only MM bass that I would probably remove the strings for to change the pickguard would be an SR 5, and that's just because the controls are attached to the pickguard. But, I'm sure you could even get away with changing that one without removing it if you were careful (ie lazy).
