I would only ever use hard cases. I have never liked gig bags. Plus you can do this with a hard case!

Why would one want to use a gig bag over a hard shell case? Any advantages I am not thinking of?

For the most part I keep my balls in the hard-shell case. I use the gig bag if I'm bringin one out & don't feel like taking the big case along.
PLUS, you can wear the gig bag! This allows you to carry a combo amp in one hand and a club soda in the other.
I used to be an advocate of gig bags - but no more.
I think that they can ruin the finish of a guitar - take a look at the link to the post on the bass side.
I've seen examples of guitars having a "swirling" as a result of using a gig bag - akin to polishing your car with grit on the buffing cloth.
The type of case that CandidX has mentioned are the next best thing IMO.
I've used one and they are great. They are lightweight and you can "wear" them just like Pete Dubaldo. Not that I'd like to do a "Tim Sullivan" on one though.
