Sadowsky PortaBag. That's gonna be a purchase fairly soon for me.

I would only ever use hard cases. I have never liked gig bags. Plus you can do this with a hard case!

I usually prefer using a ladder.

Ladder is usually safer (for your basses), and you can usually reach higher. :)

I used to be an advocate of gig bags - but no more.
I think that they can ruin the finish of a guitar - take a look at the link to the post on the bass side.
I've seen examples of guitars having a "swirling" as a result of using a gig bag - akin to polishing your car with grit on the buffing cloth.
The type of case that CandidX has mentioned are the next best thing IMO.
I've used one and they are great. They are lightweight and you can "wear" them just like Pete Dubaldo. Not that I'd like to do a "Tim Sullivan" on one though.
Check them out.

Why would one want to use a gig bag over a hard shell case? Any advantages I am not thinking of?

In addition too, not instead of. Slinging it over your shoulder gives you 2 free hands (assuming you have 2 hands)

And didn't Jongitarz refer to them as Ballsacks. :p

I've never used an actual gig bag. Always thought it's too precarious, and the ones I've looked at (leather Levys etc) looked more for show than go, and were surprisingly heavy.

Exceptions were the studio players in NYC, who rode a lot on subways. That made sense to me.

For the most part I keep my balls in the hard-shell case. I use the gig bag if I'm bringin one out & don't feel like taking the big case along.

PLUS, you can wear the gig bag! This allows you to carry a combo amp in one hand and a club soda in the other.

Has anyone seen the Incase Slim Bag in person or own one? I'd like to check one out. Otherwise, I'll stick with the hardshells.
