I don't yet own any MM guitars but I've been looking at them a lot lately as I need a humbucker hardtail guitar with piezo suitable for drop-tuning. I also really have a yen for the AL model just because it's different and funky. I'm a big fan of the design and build of these instruments, my faves being the AL, Silo Special and SuperSport.
HOWEVER, the one thing putting me off buying one is the inevitability of my maple fretboard developing a mucky grey pallour owing to the absence of a proper finish. I've seen a number of 2nd hand MMs and the necks look awful to me. I certainly wouldn't buy a used one, so I reckon the resale value is virtually nil. Of course, I know rosewood is an option on most models but I prefer maple.
So my question is, can you get replacement necks for these guitars? Alternatively are there any secrets MM owners can share for keeping your guitars looking nice?
Thanks.
