I don't yet own any MM guitars but I've been looking at them a lot lately as I need a humbucker hardtail guitar with piezo suitable for drop-tuning. I also really have a yen for the AL model just because it's different and funky. I'm a big fan of the design and build of these instruments, my faves being the AL, Silo Special and SuperSport.

HOWEVER, the one thing putting me off buying one is the inevitability of my maple fretboard developing a mucky grey pallour owing to the absence of a proper finish. I've seen a number of 2nd hand MMs and the necks look awful to me. I certainly wouldn't buy a used one, so I reckon the resale value is virtually nil. Of course, I know rosewood is an option on most models but I prefer maple.

So my question is, can you get replacement necks for these guitars? Alternatively are there any secrets MM owners can share for keeping your guitars looking nice?

Thanks.

The only way EBMM would sell you a neck is to either send them back the original EBMM neck or send them back the whole EBMM guitar and have them replace it for you. They will only replace it with the exact same one (wood, fret board, nat or painted headstock) that the guitar originally left the factory with.

Is that likely (that they will replace it) ?

Yes Ernie and Pete are correct. Please understand that if you are attached to your birds eye pattern or grain structure it will be a different neck

The problem with some second hand necks is not with the instruments but the hygiende of the user and their love and care for their guitar or bass. Just about any of our necks can be cleaned up. THere are numerous threads documenting people bringing a bass or guitar back from the grunge world......

With regular maintenance and care you will have a perfectly fine neck

I bought a used Silhouette Special with a yucky, grungy neck. It definitely had that nasty gray muck on the fingerboard. One can easily find that on a rosewood fretboard too. As soon as I got home, I used some EB Wonder Wipes, and it looks great now. The following pictures were taken the day I bought the guitar, after I cleaned the neck.

Wow is that a beauty! Love that Las Vegas Gold, too. That neck sure did clean up nicely as well. Very nice.

I bought a guitar that was hanging at GC for a year, played by every kid who walked in there, the neck cleaned up perfectly, looked like a new neck after 15 minutes of work -

That's encouraging. I was under the impression once sweat had got into the wood you were stuck with it for life. I'll have to investigate these Wonder Wipes. Cheers. :)

You can get a lot of enjoyment and save a lot of money by refurbishing a guitar.
The necks are no big deal to do and you'll get plenty of advice from us here on the forum - we all have our "Pet" ways of doing it.

Nice choice on the AL - it was one of the reasons I got back playing after a long absence. To me, it is a revelation and I love it. I'm not dissing my Les Paul, but it doesn't get a look in nowadays.

So - don't worry about the neck - it'll become your best friend!
If you want to try out one of mine and your in Cardiff let me know.
