Need advice on getting a good distortion sound?

I have the same amp, and I think it is great on it's own, with my axis the red channel almost has too much gain. I also like to use my MXR Dyna Comp in front of it. I like to get a cleaner, thicker sound with it. Turn your gain down a little less than you like, and kick the comp in, level all of the way up, and sens. about 9 o clock. The tone doesn't change, if it does it is very little, but you get that killer sustain without too much saturation.

Wow that looks to be the business. I clicked on the dealer link and see a store carries them only a few miles away. Must go check it out. I use to run alot of different distortions through my amps clean channels but got really sick of that. I rely more on my amps distortion, but like a good clean booster for leads.

Don't know if your amp has an effects loop or not, but if it does AND you just want clean boost, be sure to check out the RC Booster. Run it through the loop in your amp and you will be set - it is an awesome pedal also!

Actually, I'd get rid of the Marshall. I've always hated them, although I do recall doing a recording about five years ago with one of the big anniversary stacks which even had a nice clean sound! That was kind of cool. But aside from that, every Marshall I've played through before or since then has been a nightmare. They just don't make 'em with a tone I like. The EQ voicings are just in all the wrong places!

I know, that may not be the most helpful post in the world, but just on the off chance that your ears are like mine...

I agree with you guys: Marshall isn't a dream tone box, and Mark IV is really bad ass amp. You can also use Rocktron Intellifex instead TC and you will also get really cool tone. Plus I rather don't advice you to buy tones of stomp box and so on, good, tube amp will make it rolling like nothing else!

One does and one doesn't. I play through an HRD and a Epi Valve Special at home and also use a PodX3 now through studio monitors/headphones for late night and direct stuff. Looks like the pre-amp one will suit me better, just gotta get in there to try one out, hopefully soon. I did use a TS9DX for a long time and it really never clicked for me.

Hey guys i only recently got my beautiful BFR JP6 and its unbelievable.im learning some stuff from metallica at the mo and im trying to get anice tone.im playing through a boss ME50 and a marshall dsl401 valve amp.

would u guys use compression on this type of sound?
anyways any help would be appreciated.ciao

The DSL is a 1st class amp - I have the TSl601 but it's the same as yours with an extra channel, I'd ditch the ME50 and pickup a tubescreamer, best sound ever is my luke through a marshall with the TS9 as a boost,

And if you put a patch cable in the FX loop send and rtn - it'll act as as a secondary boost, - Blow yer heed off!

Colin, the 2nd channel on your DSL is meant as a crucnch if you got the footswitch and put a patch cable in - when you enable the fxloop it acts as a 3rd channel, if you have the TS9 - it's a little weak on it's own but that combined with your marshall Gain at 10 and the FX boost will give you what you want,

I'm in meetings solid for the next 2 days but I'll post some of my tone on Tuesday - see if it will steer you in the right direction.

Low gain, higher volume, big strings and pick, pound the snot out of it.

As far as Marshalls go, I've never been a fan of the JCM2000 series they sound not that great. I love the JVM410's. Personally I own a Krank.

A Keeley modded Bluesdriver sounds good in front of most amps, nice and dynamic to my ears.

Well, I actually quite like the DSL as it is... But for a slightly different flavour, I'd be an arse not to suggest the best distortion box I ever came across (though sometimes I feel like keeping it my little secret).

The Emma Electronic ReezaFRATzitz simply sounds amazing - it's clear, defined and has the widest scope tonally of any box I've ever tried.

Colinboy go to your local store with all your gear and try everything thay have and let your ears choose. I cant recommend this new vintage modern eough.

hhhhmmmmm. You should try the new Vintage Modern. I was not a Marshall fan till i got this beast. I am defo not a fan of the ddsl and tsl series. not my cup of whiskey.

We just got a purple Vintage Modern in the store....It is one of the better sounding Marshalls I've heard...I might need to bring it home for a day to put some sound clips up....my axis sounds nice through it.

Dargie Delight Luke Straight Into A Marshall - No Fx
