I'd say a finish has nothing to do with tone.
The natural and transparent finish Stingrays are made out of ash, so maybe that's what you're hearing.
Andrew, I think finish differences, a la painted/oiled/poly/fried over-easy do make a slight difference in tone of an instrument.
I think color is a big factor! That's why they quit making white Bongo's!

The body of my 2005 natural SR4 is a single piece of ash, and it sounds punchier to me than my 1996 natural SR4 which has a two-piece ash body. Might that have made the difference in tone which you perceived?
