Are natural SR4 brighter and punchier than colored ones?

I played one the other day and it had a very punchy bright feel. It did have a maple board but I havent played one like that before. I dont know, maybe it was new strings.

I'd say a finish has nothing to do with tone.

The natural and transparent finish Stingrays are made out of ash, so maybe that's what you're hearing.

Andrew, I think finish differences, a la painted/oiled/poly/fried over-easy do make a slight difference in tone of an instrument.

I know they used to use a bit of alder but IIRC, ALL StingRays, Sterlings, and SR5s are made of ash.

I should have said with the colored MM finishes vs. the natural MM finish.

I thought indeed that the MM basses with a transparant/natural finish were made out of a different wood.

There's nothing like a good piece of ash!

Yes. And the mahogany 30th anniv SR is most versatile b/c it can play both happy and sad music (sometimes in the same tune).

There were some mid-'90s stingrays that received a satin natural finish. I bought one from Jack a long time ago. I think I read that Paul McCartney requested one or something so there was a limited production run. I guess it could be perceived that these satin finish basses had a slightly different tone.

I dunno about sound...but every natural SR4 I've played has been SUPER LITE!
Maybe in the ballpark of 9lbs, give or take a little.
