I played one the other day and it had a very punchy bright feel. It did have a maple board but I havent played one like that before. I dont know, maybe it was new strings.

The natural and transparent finish Stingrays are made out of ash, so maybe that's what you're hearing.

I could be wrong, though. Not like it hasn't happened before, ya know.

Just like the rest of them. :p

I know they used to use a bit of alder but IIRC, ALL StingRays, Sterlings, and SR5s are made of ash.

Someone throw pebbles at me if i'm wrong.

I feel the tone could be a little different... but no way in a live setting can anyone tell the difference...

Maybe it's the colour of your strap or brand of battery..... ;) :D

I thought indeed that the MM basses with a transparant/natural finish were made out of a different wood.

The body of my 2005 natural SR4 is a single piece of ash, and it sounds punchier to me than my 1996 natural SR4 which has a two-piece ash body. Might that have made the difference in tone which you perceived?

Yes. And the mahogany 30th anniv SR is most versatile b/c it can play both happy and sad music (sometimes in the same tune).:D

There were some mid-'90s stingrays that received a satin natural finish. I bought one from Jack a long time ago. I think I read that Paul McCartney requested one or something so there was a limited production run. I guess it could be perceived that these satin finish basses had a slightly different tone.

I dunno about sound...but every natural SR4 I've played has been SUPER LITE!
Maybe in the ballpark of 9lbs, give or take a little.
