BTW, not to plug a particular couple of stores - but if any of you knuckleheads are interested in purchasing one of these beauties still Brand New - I did a quick search and found that there are, as hard to believe as this is - still 4 in existence in the U.S. Since they are new they still would have the new warranty as well:

There are 3 at this store:

ROYAL MUSIC CENTER
1966 ROCKAWAY PARKWAY
BROOKLYN , NY 11236-0000
718-241-3330
718-241-3516 (fax)
[email protected]
Royal Music | Guitar Bass Keyboards Drums Superstore! | 516-377-8000

and 1 at this store:

DELOACH'S MUSIC
254 NORTHSIDE DRIVE EAST
STATESBORO , GA 30458-0000
912-764-2527
912-489-9941 (fax )

Personally - I have to confess - I love these guitars!

Dan

Dan - or BP - Beth - Kevin,

To possibly help our international brethren, would N.O.S Sport models fall under the recently considered more than two years out of production so available for international shipping policy?

Also - be careful with Royal - they have the famous purple Sport HSS where 2/3 of the top faded to green (it was probably in the shop window for an extended stretch) but they are marketing as a custom color that defies description and looks like a piece of heaven. (in the Merrick Store)

MB, I can assure you that when it comes to the Axis Sport, all bets are off as far as international shipping and sales. It's wide open.

I remember that guitar you described at Royal - I am amazed that it is still there! And yes, they still do have quite a few - certainly more than 3 - in stock. It's probably a dozen or more.

And to be fair, I should mention - there are other stores who have them:

Hi mbgreene,

what does this mean: "the recently considered more than two years out of production so available for international shipping policy"
I am desperately looking for (NOS) Axis Sport guitars in Europe.
Hot damn!!! These colors available at Royal are so extraordinary awesome!!!! But all of them do have this unspeakable tremolo. I absolutely do not like tremolos.

@5stringer: Is there a reason why the Sports aren't manufactured any more? Obviously many are very satisfied with the Sports, and when striving the forum, I see many that would like to buy one - if they were still available.
Is there something as a Musc Man custom shop to get one built?

Another question on the Sport vs ASS - the HH config on the Sport always seems to be all black pickups versus "zebra" stripe on the recent ASS. Are they actually the same PUs? My Sport does sound pretty different to my AXIS and I wondered if it was just the body wood or if the PUs are also different...

Some of the Sports have the zebra pickup (mine does for example). In a recent post, Dan said that in 1999 when the decision was made to reduce the number of options and slightly change the design (went to either HH or MM90's with no pickguard) some of the models went to the non-zebra humbuckers.

During this transition, some of the original models (with the pickguard) were produced with the non-zebra p-ups. Tony5150 has one such model.

The main difference between the two is the body wood used.

Hi Headcrash.

BP announced a few months ago that the limited edition guitars (such as the 20th Silhouette and the 2005 etc limited edition models) would be available for sale outside of the US 2 years after they were first available.

What this means, for example, is that if you see a 2005 limited edition guitar for sale at a US dealer, you will be able to purchase it from that US dealer. You wouldn't be able to do the same with a 2007 model yet, until 2 years has passed.

There is no definite guidance on whether a NOS guitar, such as the Sports, is covered by this agreement.

The current dealer agreement means that dealers cannot sell outside of their country. It helps to support the local distributors and saves a lot of headache if there are ever any warranty issues. The distributors have supported EBMM for a long time, with advertising and building brand awareness and the like.

Keep checking e-bay, they appear quite regularly.

Hi Headcrash,

Have a look at this one. It's really good value at the moment and they will ship abroad.

Hi Jimmy,

thanks for your answers.
I have this particular Sport on my watchlist. Whereever the price might end, I do not like the rosewood fretboards. And this sunburst is not as flashy as I would like. I really dig those sparkle colors, or something green, blue, purple transparent. Man, am I picky... ;)
At the moment I have one in plain black (boooooooooring), which I equipped a white pearl pickguard from pickguardheaven with. Now it does at least not look like a metal axe...

I knew someone was going to ask that question - it is a good one. I don't really have a clear answer other than to say, in April 2002 when the final decision was made to drop the Sport, there were a lot of things going on - not the least of which were increasing new options on other instruments, the surging sales of the John Petrucci guitar, etc. There was concern about having too many options and instruments and confusing our dealers and customers. The Sport sales, after selling well initially, were really tailing off, and there was enough similarities between that and the SuperSport to keep that concept going. That same similarity between the Sport and SuperSport probably contributed to the demise of the Sport - that is, for not too much more money, you could get a maple top

That's probably not the best explanation, but it's the best I can come up with right now! :p

Dan,

Did the inroduction of the SUB have some contribution as well? I thought that I'd seen a thread in the past which mentioned it, but I may well have dreamt that.

Great information though, thanks very much.

Good question and point, jw - worth explaining:

The pickups in the EVH, Axis, Axis Sport, and Axis SuperSport have always been exact same custom-wound DiMarzios from the very beginning, starting in 1991 and continuing to this day. When the decision was made to drop the pickguard from the Sport, it was also decided that the zebra-stripes did not look right on the ash body with no pickguard (don't ask me why) and we switched to all-black pickups. It has always led to questions as to whether the pickups are the same - but they are. Just a different color on one of the coil covers.

So that leaves the body woods to explain the differences in tone, and the woods are significantly different .... plus the usual fact that every good guitar has its own "voice", if you will.

Arf!

Jimmy, no doubt it did ... plus the Bongo bass .. just a lot of stuff! For a small company, we have a lot of instruments with a lot of options, and the Sport was no exception. So, by eliminating the Sport, it sort of cleared the way for some new ideas.
