I want to buy a GK amp to go along with my SR5. GC has it for $599. RMCaudio quoted me for $499. Will they match that?

Why don't you just ask at the Guitar Center with the amp?

If they say, "no," give your business to RMCAudio.

This is the easy stuff.

They've matched for me in the past. They'll even match Musicians Friend (which is owned by the same company anyway). That is, they'll give you the same price that MF has, including any discounts, and knock off enough to make it the same "out the door" (i.e., no tax at MF).

When RMC audio gives you an email quote, they put this little thing on the end:

"Confidentiality Note:
The information in this electronic mail ("e-mail") message is confidential and is intended for you to reference when ordering from RMC Audio. Sharing our quoted prices with our competitors is considered an invasion of our privacy. We respect your privacy, please respect ours."

Yeah, GC will probably match the price, but why don't you give RMC audio your business? They don't charge tax, they don't charge shipping, and they're decent people with great service.

When someone starts saying "our quoted price is private," I begin to think they are undercutting their dealer agreement.

I don't necessarily think that. Just like we're not supposed to post the price we pay for an EBMM instrument.

I do tend to give my business to the company that gives me the least hassle. So in this case, RMC is giving a great price w/o having to haggle. GC will probably only maybe match it (not beat it) so I tend reward the company that gives the initial best deal.

Here's a question to help answer your question:

Does GC pay MORE for the item than RMC Audio (or any other retailer for that matter)?

Does a New York Toyota dealer pay more than a San Francisco Toyota dealer for a new Tacoma truck?

Well, since they ALL pay the same - who is willing to take the "smallest" profit?

But regarding on-line sellers you must address: shipping, taxes if any, etc. . . to compare the actual OTD cost, i.e., GC may have to charge sales tax after "matching" the on-line retailer price, and the on-line retailer may then charge for shipping. :)

Fred,

Yeah, I agree, RMC has pretty good prices! However, the other thing is: returns!

GC has a great return policy (like MF). Most "on-liners" will still pass S&H costs ( to and from buyer) to the buyer.

In person at GC it's a "full" refund!

For the Musicman instruments and accessories I like Pete and Colin (among others too).:)

The agreement can list an minimum advertised price that a dealer cannot sell a product below. They cannot tell a dealer that they are nto allowed to sell below a certain price, or that would be price fixing, which I think is illegal (if I remember right from college, 20-something years ago).

GC has their "GLP", guaranteed lowest price, and they will meet anyones advertised lowest price. I think they would probably not fell obligated to meet the price quoted in an e-mail.

The return policy definitely has value. GC/MF usually 30 days. Same day music = 60 days. Some other dealers = 1 week. So if you're absolutely sure that this is the product that you want (absent it being broken) and really have no possibility of returning it, then buy from the lower priced one with the shorter return policy.

thats ture but, SOME companies give incentives to dealers for quantiy sold. example if they sell ten amps they might get one free and make 100% profit on that item. (thats an industry secret). i learned that one from the days working for sam ash. thats why companies are willing to do better on prices on some items.usually you know when the sales person check what the call "the line" and his face lights up and he drops 25% than the usual 10% off the price juest to make sure the deal goes thru. (it's a secret don't tell any one).

GC has always done whatever it took to give me the best price. If they couldnt get the same EXACT price, they would give me the difference in free strings, ect.

My local GC's Marietta, Atlanta, & Duluth have all been great stores for me.

Yamaha pianos have a minimum retail which they strictly enforce, as do several band instrument companies. It works very well for them and keeps the value of their lines up. I think they are the only ones currently doing this though. Oh yeah, Mesa. If I am correct Retail = MAP (minimum advertised price) = MR (minimum retail). That is why they are ALWAYS excluded from coupon prices and never to on sale.
