I'm auditioning for a little old cover band on Monday - standard fare. Was thinking of busting out the DDHH Bongo, but then thought it may be too much for this crowd in terms of visual. We know it would kick in the tone department, which is all that matters, and I like how it looks.. Appears the former bass player is/was a G&L L2K guy. The real problem may be that I suck...

Thoughts?

JIM

PS: I know, if they don't like the Bongo I don't need them anyway!

Funny, but thats one of the reasons I bought a Stingray (as opposed to all Bongos)...as not to scare off the ignorant.

I'm really new to the Bongo but not one person has said anything funny about the looks. It's all about the amazing tone and that's what i get complimented on. Only one who's said anything funny is my guitarist buddy (who plays an axis) and that's only because he says I buy new basses rather than change the strings. :D

Why not just bring a traditional back-up just in case.

I find it's the people who play the Bongo a bit scary. Have you met maddog? Squidlizard?? And do I even have to mention Jack???

Bring it on Bongoloids :D

+2 on the Mingus comment...

Though on one particular audtion last fall I opened my Bongo case and had the lead singer/guitar player comment "Whoa, now that scares me!".

Few bars into the first song he was all smiles.

Break it out - tone speaks volumes and certainly trumps all!

You're thinking that I'm going to say something about how someone else plays?

Jim.

I'm Joe Lunchpail. Play the Bongo.

I think no one cares what instruments look like but musicians. I know before I started my career as a no-talent gear whore, I really didn't know or care what guitars looked like, and probably couldn't differentiate a guitar from a bass.

Break out the green machine!

Hey Jim,
Stick with great tone and a solid groove and the DDHH BONGO will speak for itself for whoever has the ears to hear, and never mind the idle chatter or the Ghosts between your own ears, that all disappears when the song is counted in:cool::)

Looks don't matter. Tone and attitude matters.

I don't worry about the looks of my Bongo. I'm way uglier than any bass ever made. If they can deal with me, they can deal with my Bongo.

If anyone gives me a hard time I just rip the turkey leg out of my mouth and whack 'em up side the head with it.

The funny thing is, it's only other bassists that think the Bongo looks "odd". I've only received positive comments from other musicians.

+1.

My Bongo 5 HH (sold it last year:() got more comments than my Stingrays, Sadowskys, 70's Fenders, etc. combined.

Most people like the look of it.

To answer your question, who cares? If it is the right bass for the gig, go for it!:)
