Hey there!

I just bought this awesome silhouette a few weeks ago...
There is the stocked Singlecoil and the SUB1 Humbuckers in it.

The SUBs are way better than the stocked HBs, however, I was thinking about getting some new ones... Maybe D Sonic, cause I really like the sounds of the JP BFRs.

Actually, I LOVE the sound on Train of Thought by Dream Theater, which is played througha Steve's Special, but since we are 2 guitarists in our band, I think I will need more Mids...

In general I like modern and FAT sounds... that's why I was thinking about getting a D sonic, actually...

Hope you guys have some good suggestions for me.

all the best,
Jerry

Go try the Evolution set... Neck and Bridge... really nice. But if you one something that punches thru, then go the PAF Joe/FRED route...

I personally find the Steve's Special more suitably voiced for basswood rather than alder.

Jerry,

glad to hear you're still liking that Silo. I was going to install a set of Dimarzio Breeds if I had gotten around to it. I've heard those are just awesome for the Silo.

I've also been curious about the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo on a Silo. I bet that would just kill!!

Thanks, so far!

But what do you guys think about a Dsonic for the bridge? That was my first thought...Any experiences?

That guitar had an evolution bridge and air norton neck. It sounded frickin KILLER!

That's a nice guitar you have. Love it, take care of it! a D-Sonic would be pretty tasty too......

The Air Norton was very warm, plenty of mids with that basswood body. very smooth and articulate! I loved it!

I'm loving the bridge Breed in my Silo Special. Bumps the whole guitar to another level, imo, especially cuz it also effects position 2 and 3. The volume jump is about the same as the stock HB, but it's a whole lot meatier, very musical and dynamic - pick attack sensitive.

The Air Norton is nice... But it's too contemporary sounding... I only keep it in my JP6. I prefer more "squish" in my neck tones... PAF Joe!!!!! Even the Evolution Neck has it... Nice!!!! The Virtual PAFs for some reason, don't have it as much as I'd like....

Tone Zone in a silo (special anyway) is my all time favorite sounding combo. Something about the spank of the alder and the cut of the maple neck and fretboard sound so good with that pickup- sort of like a Les Paul but with a bit more drive. It makes me very happy.

Thanks, so far!

I like the DSonic for metal. DSonic into a tubescreamer into my 6505 is the quintessential "metal" sound. That being said, it definitely isn't the warm, Alnico-y classic rock sound AT ALL, much more brash and tight.

For "rock" tones I'd recommend the Tone Zone, it turns any amp into a rock-machine (the 6505 settings that sound very "metal" with my D-Sonic equipped JP sound very classic rock with my ToneZone equipped silo special). For metal the D-Sonic is a very good choice, and definitely has that in your face sound (not to mention it makes pinch harmonics ridiculously easy- it inspires me to play some Killswitch Engage shenanigans whenever I plug in with it.

Does it not overpower the single coils?

Well, even though I wanted my Silo to be the alround-talent, I guess the D Sonic would be nicer, cos I actually love modern, tight, metally sounds...

And for the neck...I dont know... Air norton, no?

all the best, and thanks for your help!

I did the Pickup Finder thing on Dimarzio's website. Just putting in the guitar's characteristics, and your desire for "more mids", it came up with the Air Norton, Breed-neck, and PAF Joe. Of the three, I'd probably try the Breed or the PAF Joe.

Again, I've not had a good experience with the Air Norton. It definitely had more mids, but way more than my ear wanted or was used to. YMMV.

Of the three, I'd probably try the Breed or the PAF Joe.

As I've said, the Breed Bridge is a winner. The Breed Neck is supposed to also sound good in the bridge position, but I chose the slighter hotter and brighter Bridge Breed, mostly to give position 2 an edge, which is does. If I was doing an HSH, I'd go with both the bridge and Neck Breed, if it had a rosewood board. Can't speak for the brighter maple. mmm, thinking, on a maple board I might choose the Neck Breed for the bridge also. I think the bridge breed is tighter, and the neck breed is more spongy. What I especially like is that I can get rich classic sounds from it, but cranking it another notch gets me to some seriously crunchy goodness. The bottom is fat but very tight.

Sorry if I'm sounding a bit like a broken record on this Breed thing. I'm just enthused! :p

hey folks,

me again. still with the same problem :D

I recently bought a tone zone, but haven't installed it yet... So let's see what happens.

Well, for the neck i definitely would like to have a more jazzy type of sound, especially at clean/crunch stuff. (radiohead's smooth neck sounds at there basement gig might be a reference for this one... check out the songs "nude" or "reckoner")
Eventhow I don't want the neck to be too muddy at more higain licks...
all in all it should be a really flexible pickup which cleans up very well for some quiet stuff.

In addition, I was wondering about the replacement of the single coil. In comparison to my 57/62's and the leosounds red house (you probably might not know the last ones. these are german handwired pickups... LEOSOUNDS - Handwound Guitar Pickups reaaaally good, and not to expensive pickups! Check 'em out!) in my strats, this one sounds way brighter and maybe a little too bright.

Of course a reference for a good mid sc sound is clapton, but i want one that fits to the humbucker really well, since I don't want to start over my settings all over again, everytime I switch between HB and SC. I guess, that's plausible ;) However, it has to sound as authentically as possible. Especially the position 2 and 4!

To sum up the whole thing: All three pickups should be nearly noise free, since I love playing a lot of FX. I guess that is also an important aspect that has to be considered.

Thanks again!
