If you had to pick your favorite guitar riff, what would it be?
Mine is by my favorite guitarist Larry Carlton, off his "On Solid Ground" album. The riff is in the song "All In Good Time", at about 6:10 into the song. Every time I hear it, it puts a smile on my face.
Most of my favorites would be in blues, rock, or jazz. This one is "bluesy".

Edit: For some odd reason this link doesn't always work. I'm working on resolving that problem. I think I have it working now. :)

Volt,

I know that "smile" all to well buddy!!!

There's so many though!! I really like the opening pt. 1 lead segment of the classic "Crossroads"; Aqualung-lead; Feel your love tonight-lead;

And, one of the most inspirational leads: Johnny b Good, of the Johnny Winter "Alive & Well" album. It's got soooooooooo much rauch - awesome!!!:)

One of my favs of the 60's was Spirit. Randy California was a big influence on me, though not much is or even was heard of him. So many tasty riffs and songs. Sadly, Randy drowned while saving his son from drowning, not long after I saw one of their last performances at an outdoor concert at Red Rock in Washington state, where they opened for Canned Heat.

Randy claimed that the descending line in this brief instrumental, titled Taurus, was ripped off by Page for Stairway, while they toured together, Zep opening for Spirit back then.

These two come to mind instantly, but as other members have posted "... there are sooooooo many of them"! And that's a good thing ;).

Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song

From newer stuff - or can one say Steve Stevens is new  (at least his album Memory Crash is), I really dig the Cherry Vanilla main riff.

Riffs eh? Two guys contributed the tastiest rock riffs ever: Tony Iommi & Ritchie Blackmore.

War Pigs, Into the Void, Snowblind, Cornucopia, Black Sabbath, Sweet Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Heaven & Hell

Highway Star, Speed King, Black Night, Space Truckin, Burn, Man on the Silver Mountain, Stargazer

And of course the two most over played, most recognizable riffs ever: Iron Man and Smoke on the Water.

The defense rests. ;)

I can testify to that Volt. When I first heard that tune in 1989, on the local Jazz station, I instantly knew who it was. IMHO, that whole album is truly anointed. LC recorded it after he was shot, in the throat, at point-blank range. That tune has my favorite LC tone too. He really makes those EMGs, from his Valley Arts sig model, sing.

At the moment I think I'd have to say either Opeth's Blackwater park (the one that is played on an acoustic and then an electric before the vocals) or the metal riff from Peruvian Skies by Dream Theater, or one of the riffs from Between the Buried and Me's most recent album, Colors.

Blue Oyster Cult - "Godzilla."

There are others, but that one stands out on its own pretty good.

Nevermore - Create the Infinite's opening riff or This Godless Endeavour's main riff...

They crush my face.
