I'm on the hunt for something HSS, and I know how much I love EBMM guitars. I guess my tastes have changed a little lately, so the Alder/HSS/Vintage Trem of the Luke really appeals to me...

Well...

Since a fully loaded JP is worth much more (£ wise), I don't think there would be a problem. I would recommend trying the Luke before you make your move, since its pickups aren't everybody's cup of tea.

Cheers

This is what I thought. My JP has a tiny ding under the pickups, but I imagine I would need some cash into the deal too.

And yeah, I've owned an EMG 85 before and liked it, but I guess I'm a tad apprehensive. How single coiley are the single coils?

The 'single coils' are very single coiley. As opposed to the Noiseless pickups that were in the Clapton Signature Strat I used to have, they do really sound more vintage and sparkling with a nice, bell like bottom end (think Hendrix).

If I compare them to the Lindy Fralin/Callaham single coils in my Custom Strat, the EMGs have a more compressed, HiFi like sound, maybe more like a vintage sound that has been recorded really well.

I guess you could say the EMGs have a vintage sound were the edges have been sanded off a little.

Thanks man.

Could they get me in Timmons territory in the neck position, would you think?

You're welcome!

Well, I am not an expert Timmons-wise but looking at your equipment, I guess it could take you there, yes.
Especially considering the fact that the Luke is a truly versatile guitar.

Excellent. Versatility is what I want, and actually need right now. I'm studying at GIT in London and the JP - whilst it isn't a one trick pony - is very much in the shred/metal category. The Luke seems a lot more versatile for the stuff we cover.

FWIW, the type of thing I'm after...

Timmons (This should include both humbucker and his quasi-single coil tones)
YouTube - Andy Timmons Young Guitar DVD 2

And my current rig/tones

Hey man, thanks for the links, I liked them both very much!

After watching the Timmons clip and your current rig, I am positive that a Luke would get you there.
A Silo Special would probably also do the trick, but the big difference is that in the Luke the pickups are mounted right into the body just like on the guitar Andy uses in his clip, whereas the Silo Special has a pick guard with the pickups mounted on it. That makes a difference tone wise, maybe not a huge one, but it is noticeably different.

The biggest issue most people seem to have with the Luke is the neck with its slight and asymmetrical V-profile.
The Silo has more of a traditional profile and bigger frets, so maybe (if you haven't already) you should double check this aspect just to make sure!

Rock on!
