Hey there,

I'm just curious whether its possible to re-wire my 2006 Stingray 5 HH's pickup switch.

According to these diagrams;
http://www.ernieball.com/mmonline/techinfo/controls/cfd_StingRay5_HH.pdf

My bass is wired in parallel for all but the center position which is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 (all in series?). However If i remember correctly isn't the Stingray 5 HH center position 1 + 2 & 3 + 4 or 1 & 2 + 3 & 4? (& being parallel and + series).

Ive also noticed on the anniversary SR5 20th that its the same however the center position is all parallel.

Out of all 5 positions i LOVE and only really use the center position 3, which was the 1 + 2 + 3 + 4. So i will assume sonically that i like the 'series' wiring mode over the parallel.

Now to the real business... From reading the diagrams and playing my bass i have come to the conclusion that i really prefer Series over Parallel so i would like to ask all of you ernieballers if its possible (or if you have done this mod before) for me to re-wire the toggle switch so that all the positions are in series and not parallel.

Was also wondering if this makes any difference sonically to the center position (currently 1 + 2 + 3 + 4)? As in if i were to do this mod, would that change the tone or be the same because each toggle position is independent of the other?

One of the main reasons i want to do this is to make the pup switching more usable for my tastes... and i was also hoping that the 5th position 1&4 coils would sound more Jazz pup like in series rather that the current parallel setting which i find to woofy for me...

On a side note, ive found that the SR5 HH 1st position (1&2) which is the bridge pickup is different sounding to the SR5 H. I know in '99 the rear pickup in first position was parallel as you'll see in the diagram below so im assuming that the new SR5's which i played recently in a music store is wired as 1+2 in series?... and i actually really like that sound...but anyway... If you know whether the new SR5 H are wired in series or parallel that would be great information :).

YEP! thats the diagram i was looking for. Its so hard to keep ahead of all the changes haha.

So basically just inverse everything i said above.
My bass was made on the 10th of December 2006.

So ill rephrase my question then...

How/can? I re-wire my pickup switch so that all the positions are in Parallel? And will this affect my position 3's tone? Even though it will remain the same at 1&3 + 2 & 4.

Also the pickups humbuck regards of being in series or parallel dont they? Because there is always 2 coils running at any given time?

Thanks again
Pete

Yer i sent them a message, but i dont think that they will be very helpful with my idea and it seems most people are against the mod'ing :S

Thanks anyway

They are actually very helpful, more than you can imagine, but if I was you I woulnd't expect a "custom" wiring made to order, they will only probably answer you with a yes or a no if it is possible to carry out.

And you are right the trend here is not to discuss "alternative" wirings as it is considered a no no by the board. (I know 'cos I've been there myself)

Seriously, your best bet is going to be "trade up". Sell your current SR5 and buy a new one that was manufactured after April of 08. You may even be able to find one used. It may cost you some cash, but considering the cost/possible consequences of modifying your current SR5 you may come out ahead.

Also, technically your SR5 in position 3 (middle) is still series. Coils 1&3 are parallel and coils 2&4 are parallel, but the two sets of parallel coils are in series.

I'd rather not trade up though, i really like my current bass, and also the middle position is smoother though because the pickups are put in parallel and then series, where as the single coils put together in pairs wired as series tend to sound very harsh and almost unusable for me... and generally parallel offers that smoother tone that im looking for, but it doesnt matter..... ive decided to live with it for the moment and do my finishing touches through outboard preamps...

Thanks for your input anyway guys! appreciate it.

If it can be done, someone has done it. This is human nature, and also the Male Code ("It cannot truly be mine until I have effed it up good.").

We can discuss alternate wiring schemes all day long, but customer service is not going to help you in this case, I suspect, any more than they would give you advice on how to strip your finish or replace your pickup with an aftermarket brand.

Think for a minute about the "why not" and see what you come up with.

Its that damn 5 way Its Global Warming....its the stock market Its the much ballyhooed separation anxiety with 1953.....its aboujt a hardwired brain.....it is also about really only being able to offer factory help and not customer work....what if you dontlike it? It then becaomes our problem too......

Sorry but we have to support what we offer and cannot enter intop the realm of modifications
