Hi everyone, I've just registered on the forum and am from the UK. Having owned tons of other basses, I realised I'm crazy about Sterlings and currently have two and will be picking up my third (a 2008 limited edition HH model) tomorrow.

I wondered if I could please get some information on the DOB of the following:

F01343

If I understand correctly, the 01 after F indicates it was born in 2001? That is the year I bought it here in the UK. Also, I'm wondering what wood it's made from as it feels somewhat heavier than my other one which I'll also want ID'ing in the future but I don't have it with me.

Rowbee, welcome to the Forum. Hate to burst your bubble on deciphering our serial number code, but there is no secret coding we use at all. Any coincidences are - well, coincidences :p in terms of numbering. For instance, your serial number F01343 Sterling was built on July 6,1999. It shows up as a Blue Pearl (or Pearl Blue, as it was known then) with a rosewood fretboard. It probably has a poplar body, which can be a little heavier than the ash we use now.

with all that, glad you love the Sterlings, and by all means please post your serial numbers here all you want! And check out other threads for useful information and fun times. You will like it here and feel you are among brethren.

Thanks Dan, I'm not worried about my bubble being burst, I was just misinformed on another bass playing site about the serial numbers. At least I now know a little more about the history of one of my basses and as it's coming up to its 10th birthday, I might have to celebrate. :)

If you keep a log of this on your serial number database, you might want to add that it now has an abalone pick guard to replace the black one. It's in immaculate condition and is by far the best bass I've ever played. It also looks stunning with its Peacock Blue DR strings.

More serial numbers will follow...

...and here they are:

F03610 - I've had this less than a year and absolutely love it. I've also made a change to the pickguard on this one too.

F15577 - picked this one up today and it's VERY special indeed.

Apologies, I've just found the following in your database:

F03610...20 Feb 2001. Trans Purple with Maple. White Pearl pg.

I remember the previous owner telling me he checked it out on this website. The pickguard it actually had when I bought it was vintage white pearloid and I wasn't too keen on it so it now has a black pearloid which to me, looks far better. Also wearing DR Hot Pink strings - looks better than that sounds. :)

Dan,

Got myself a new SR5 a few minutes ago. Can you give me the usual information about E61835?

Thanks again!

edit: it really looks like it's a one-piece body, would that be possible? Picture:

Stingray 4

I just picked up a beautiful used burnt orange Stingray 4. In new condition, and for a great price. It has a serial number of E35472. What year was this built?

Thanks,
RD

Tom, congrats on your new (to you) Black/maple StingRay. Shipped to Corner Music, the coolest store (IMHO) in Nashville.

Cool, well the one you just bought from Bass Central, F15577, is a 2008 Limited Edition Sequoia Gold with maple - very nice - built on 4/03/08.

Thanks for posting your ser #'s
