To a large degree you are going to see the opinions also follow what brand bass people are using. The Fender and Fender spin-off crowds are going to like Maple and Rosewood as that is what they are accustomed to. Carvin does Ebony by default. Almost every Alembic is Ebony.

I am an Ebony person - though I think the custom Moser 5 being built for me now is going to have Rosewood. But - there is a story behind that.

Maple is best for sound attack.
Rosewood is best for warmth and maintenance (easier to clean).
Ebony looks awesome, is easy to maintain, but adds too much treble to my taste.

Wipe it down sure...

But getting out the steel wool and lemon oil and all that? No thanks.

I guess we are all different, some of us feel accomplished after applying tlc to our own instuments, you get rewarded with that sense of achievement that you did it your way and to enjoy the benefit of a slick neck back and a clean fingerboard that feels like new is the greatest feeling of all.

A bit like those people that would wax their cars every weekend, some of us think they are nuts but to them is a passion.

For fretted bass I like rosewood and maple depending of the look but for a fretless bass I prefer ebony like on a upright bass.

some bass finish just beg to have maple , other rosewood and others is ebony ( like the stealth finish would look killer with ebony fretboard )

I picked maple because ebony isn't a regular EBMM feature. If it were ebony would be the choice.

Love the feel of ebony and hate the feel of rosewood.

How to they feel different?...I guess my thinking is that my fingers are on the strings, not the fretboard, when I play.

agreed, the only difference one could probably note is on the back of the neck, between say... a painted sealed neck like a Bongo for instance and a waxed unsealed stingray or sterling and so on. (still no wetnesss sensation, unless you sweath like a proverbial)

The major difference is in the sound which is where the 4 different woods all have different characteristics.

Since I now can tell, I prefer ebony over rosewood (but can't change my poll result)... it's "attackiest"... :D

Bass fretboard

I recently bought a Sting Ray with a maple board. I have owned Rosewood and one Wenge, but I like the brightness of the Maple as well as its appearance.

Given a choice I will always go with maple. I like the look of the funk build up. I clean my maple boards but once a year and not even very thoroughly at that :)

The only RW board fretted bass I own is DD Bongo because there is no other option :)
