Hey guys,

so here´s the story....

I got my Petrucci in early 07, since then I felt pretty comfortable with it until the last few months when I swapped pups in my first ever guitar (Ibanez GSA60) and started playing it a lot.

Now I feel the Pet´s neck is too thin, the more traditional neck of my Ibanez feels more comfortable becuase of its thicker C-Shape.
Also, I often put my palm on the bridge resulting in a bad tune.

And besides that, I feel the Pets sound is too "meaty".
I like a bit more edgier sounds with a fast attack, kinda stratty...

And now I wonder if the Axis could serve me well!?
I like the classy look of the quilt maple top, the non-floating Trem but I´m not sure how it sounds and feels?

Wadya think?

The Axis or the Axis Super Sport is the perect axe...however...I would also recommend a Silo Spec (HSS config perhaps?) in this case...especially if you're wanting something kind of "Stratty".

Each and every guitar/bass has it's own character. Not all JP's are the same...really...they are not. Simply play what makes you happy.

The axis is a great guitar. It covers alot of genres. So does the Silo...but...it does not work for me. Not to say it is a bad guitar...just does not sit well with me.

I love the axis and it would be a great choice of guitar. However, you may find it does not suit your needs. Find the one that does and go with it.

As an Axis player and a previous owner of 3 Axis’s and a Super Sport. You can’t go wrong buying an Axis. The SS will give you more sounds then the Axis, but then again, so does the 25th.

Keep in mind Foggy...the feel is what seems to be his issue....the 25th...an awesome axe no doubt....might not be his cup of tea.

But...I agree with you. ;)

I´m sure all those EBMMs are great, but Al, 25th etc do not work - just talking bout the looks.

I like the Silo Spec pretty much, played one a while ago, felt good, sounded good but didn´t had something to me, u know.

And yes, it´s somehow a "feel issue".
Higain sounds are pretty fine with the Pet, cleans work well with the coilsplit and also the body feels damn good, but there is something about the neck that disturbs me.

Unfortunately I cannot testplay an Axis because stores in my area do not have Balls or just a single Pet. So I´m trying to gather as much info as possible from u guys. :)

So, am I right that the Axis´ Neck is thicker, more traditional than the Pets?
How is the overall Sound compared to the JP? - More or less bright? etc.

thanks!
Swen

The Axis neck is thicker front-to-back but narrower side-to-side compared to the Pet. It is also asymmetrical meaning it is not a perfectly symmetrical C-shape -- that's part of the reason why it feels so good in the hand. It's a great neck, a bit petite feeling, but I wouldn't call it "traditional".

Chunkier and maybe more "traditional" necks (relatively speaking, because all Ball necks are uniquely amazing) in the EBMM line would include the Silo, Silo Special, 25th, and AL. To me, the Morse is somewhere between these and the Pet.

I've never played a Luke, so I can't comment on that one.

I'd say you wouldn't go wrong with an ASS or Silo Spec, but I'd also consider a Morse. I know it's quite a pain in the a** trying to find a store in Germany that keeps a variety of EBMM models in stock but I would strongly consider a "test drive" for you to find the one you're most comfortable with. It's just too subjective a matter to find what will fit you based on just reading about it.

You must be putting some serious pressure on the bridge to make it go that much out of tune.
It´s not totally out of tune, but i raise the pitch while resting my hand on the bridge, at least I can hear it and that makes me sometimes go crazy.

I´d love to drive down to Joe for some testdrives, but I don´t have a car. :(

Think I keep my eyes open for a cheap one and then grab it, so I can resell it without any loss If I don´t like it.

I´ve seen an Axis with a rosewood fretboard, was there such a model in former times or did the owner switch necks of his Axis and an ASS?

you can order the axis / ass with rosewood or maple fretboard. also there had been a special rosewood axis / ass with an all rosewood neck and rosewood top.
