Personally, I think it's going to be a completely new guitar. New design/body, maybe some different wood. I can see JP sitting down and going over things, I mean, he's played the same JP shape for almost 10 years. Maybe he said for the 10th anniversary it's time to try something new. Maybe something more aggressive looking.
He's said in interview that he likes darker colors; they represent the music more than bright colors do. The current design is very laid back, it's not very aggressive looking and it doesn't need to be. Don't take that as a negative, I very much prefer the BFR design to 99% of guitars on the market and I own two, so it's with love that I say it. The dude beefed up and is playing heavier material, the next logical step, in my eyes, is to have an aggressive looking guitar that is as tonally amazing as the previous ones. Realistically, he could play on a guitar made of plywood and it would sound intense, so again, logically to me, the next step would be aesthetics.
I donno, I just have this feeling that it's going to be an intense piece of awesome and I can't wait to see it.

I dunno, I tend to disagree. He's played the same "style" of guitar his entire career... 24 frets, dual hums with the same general sound, floating trem, same general shred guitar body shape with long horns, super thin radius neck. He's just perfected small things about this overall design during his career. I don't think he has much interest in changing these attributes really. He's always had one guitar on stage that can do all DT material (actually 15 identical ones in different tunings), so unless he is willing to switch off between styles of guitars for different songs, I can't believe he'd be willing to actually radically change the instrument.
And I tend to disagree ... I believe he's at that age where he wants to shake things up because everything has become "been there, done that". I predict a change in musical direction with guitar(s) to reflect.
Been there, done that Izzy (51 years old).
Funny thing is that I hope you're right! I've become jaded and disinterested at the last 6-7 years of DT's metalness. I hope they change things up finally.
But they have always been metal for the most part. Portnoy himself has said that they will always be progressive, always be metal, and always be melodic.

It'll be made out of lead so he can work out & play at the same time.

I tend to agree JP wont go changing the whole guitar because he designed the last one its what HE wants and prefers so unless his tastes have changed I bet the playing character of it will be the same. But WHat hasnt been done in the guitar world yet??? About everything conceivable has been done.
I hope DT doesnt stray too far but a fresh outlook and sound would be cool on the next album. Even if they werent progressive, as a band you have to progress or die out. Look at Iron Maiden, they are still going strong after so many years and there newest material isnt the Number of the Beast but its still Maiden.

Isn't there a whole thread on how DT isn't Metal??? haha... Im so confused!
^ Please NO single cut! I hate them. Really.
