Has anyone wondered what will happen to their prized guitars after they pass on? I have one teenage son and a wife, both of whom show absolutely no interest in music (from a performance perspective). Now that I’ve passed 50, I think about these things.

Of course, I really shouldn't worry too much. I doubt I'll be thinking about my material possessions at the time of my departure. Still, I'd like to imagine that they'll go to someone who will use and appreciate them.

Any old foggies out there who've addressed this?

you know im only 26 going on 27 this month. and i to think about the big deep blue sea.
ive told one of my dearst friends to hold on to my musicman and my other equipment if i pass and i know he will put it to good use. maybe you should donate it to a highschool nearby and maybe they will name a music hall after you. you just never know. schools are always needing musical equipment and i know out there in austin they have jazz bands and blues bands in highschool.

I'd like to think that at least a couple will be kept by family, as some guitars do end up being quite a personal thing. Blood, sweat and tears on certain ones.

Then I think, but they might just sit in a closet and the necks will warp, and they'll be garbage, maybe someone who will use them should have them.

I dunno, maybe I'll get one or two cremated with me. I'll be a box of dust and some metal parts ;) In the future they'll find me and try to figure out what the hell I was.

I'm only 35 and I had this conversation with my wife just last week. She told me, "you worry too much, and if our daughter wants to play guitar there's no way she's going to play your lefty guitars anyway".

I always imagine my great grand kids bringing my guitars to Antiques Roadshow or something like that.

Just build a Spinal Tap-esque tomb, fill it with all your gear and then get ready to rock the afterlife....

Good idea on donating to the high school. The band director at my son's high school was one of my fellow Longhorn Band members back in the 70's. I'll talk with him about it.

I've also been thinking of letting my guitar teacher help me as well. He has a number of aspiring young guitarists who cannot afford the nicer guitars. I'd like to help a young, musically gifted player without the near term prospect of acquiring a top quality guitar.

All this said, I don't PLAN on going away anytime soon. Contingency plans are good, though.

I've told my wife to contact a few specific friends right here to help her sell them. That way someone will get some barely used, like-new guitars, and she'll have some extra money in her pocket... :p

I told my that when I pass she is to log on here with my id and sell them all. If they don't sell, she knows how to eBay.

At 48 I have not even thought about it. My family has the same use for my guitars as yours, none. Daughter has a boyfriend in a band, but I would never let him touch one (he's an LP Studio "player" in a scream-o band), with me alive or dead. He doesn't have the appreciation for the instrument at all. Church or a school sounds like a good idea. I hope not to have to make (or my family make) that decision any time soon as I'm having too much fun with my balls in the constant quest for that perfect tone.

I had thought about that. At least one of them is going to the grave with me. The others won't be of use to me so I don't really care where they go...but my kids are both starting to show interest in guitar.

I just turned 30 and at the moment i only have one Ball (hopefully a pair next week) and i would like to see them go to a good home and be appreciated but being that i'm currently single id have to make sure my plans and wishes were clearly written to ensure they were handled with respect.
Since i am a worship leader at my church i would probably donate them to someone who could use them and appreciate them for that purpose in ministry.

or maybe have someone contact Fing and see if he wants to buy them back :)

I'm 29 and have, perhaps quite mental, made a will. I'm not married and I don't want my girlfriend to miss out on anything for what reason whatsoever. My guitar-equipment will go to my local music-school though to be donated to someone who can't afford something of quality. Last good deed after my passing.

Oh man, what a topic! I like your train of thought on this, "wife idea". Will have to make that tonight's dinner conversation. :(

Maybe the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame should have a special Ernie Ball Music Man display for guitar collections ??
