Thanks guys. This is truly a rare EVH but what is really cool to me is the top. I have seen 3 prototype EVH guitars and the tops on all 3 were just unreal. They really outdid themselves!
This EVH was not Dudley's, as his was the other natural prototype EVH that had an Original Floyd Rose and a brown back. Sterling may know a little history on this one (80156) as it was used in Guitarist Magazine as well as the cover of The Guitar Handbook and was shipped to Strings N Things in the UK on May 15th, 1991. I was told by the previous owner it was the last prototype Ed signed off on before production began. Not 100% sure on that, but it is a prototype for sure. As for the Floyd, Fender had a license agreement on the Original Floyd Rose and that is when Music Man went with Gotoh for the Music Man tremolo (or at least that was how I understood it. For what it's worth, the Gotoh tremolo is more comfortable and I actually prefer it to the Original Floyd). The tuners and pick ups are all the same as production.
I'm not quite understanding the routes under the trem posts. Can you explain that a little, or post a better pic of that? It appears the routes are under the post, but not under the rest of the tremelo. Does it allow the posts to be lowered below the surface of the guitar? Just curious. thanks!
EDIT: Perhaps as a means to adjust/lower the action?
