I often hear the StingRay H referred to as a "one trick pony." I think my two StingRays have a very broad range of tone depending on how you EQ them. I have never understood that comment.

Go into your local Guitar Denter or other music retailer, and pull a Stingray H off the wall. I guarantee that you will find the highs and lows cranked and the mids cut.

People who don't know the first thing about 'Rays but think they do set the eq this way because in their limited understanding the 'Ray is a "slap bass." So they set what they think is a good slap eq curve and then wonder why it doesn't sound good for fingerstyle.

Between the 3-band onboard eq and a good eq section on an amp, you can do anything with a 'Ray. Throw a Tech-21 VT Bass stomp box in there, and you've got a whole universe of tones available to you.

The Stingray H has a unique and distinctive tone to it. You can get a variety of sounds from it, but it will still sound like a Stingray. That's not a bad thing!

unless i tell it to sound like a tuba, then it will gleefully obey and forget what it was supposed to sound like a minute ago. mine is way into method acting. i think the dumb sob actually thinks its a tuba.

Some people can't handle the truth due to their ignorance.:D

That eq is an amazing for what it can do. Combine that with hand position and the tones keep coming. Recently I bought a practice amp for home and have playing along with the iPod. My taste in music is fairly eclectic. I get pretty close to any tone I want with the single H. Now if I could just get my skill to the level of my basses tone.

ignorance may be too strong of a word. maybe some cats havent investigated it terribly deeply before coming to an opinion. the first vinyl album i ever bought was queens play the game. i got it because all my friends were raving about it. after a couple spins, i thought it was a pretty good record, but maybe not worth the $6.99 i paid for it. it didnt even have my favorite song on it. then one day i realized you could flip it over and listen to 4 more "hidden" tracks.

Yeah, it was a bit harsh. That's why I included the smiley face. I think Chuck B said it better "Those people just don't know... "

funny, the music academy graduate drummer in the band I've been playing with lately was amazed at the variety of tones my 2 band Ray produced at a jam just two days ago.

I don't expect everybody to be as obssesed as me about bass tone but I'm often amazed how some bassists seem to be completely tone ignorant.

I used to tell my friend Chuck, "You must BE the tuba." One of the few people I know who actually got it - and could pull it off.

Probably the same folks who find it difficult to play a 4H or 5H EBMM because they can't find a place to anchor their thumb. The only limitation is the player.

Now that's funny. :D

What's not so funny, however, is I can't seem to get all those tones. I can get a few, however, even with hand placement, flats, etc... I can't accomplish half the tones, say, cyoungnashville does. And I have two Rays (yes one with flats) going through an LMII with 2/10's. The sad part is I know it's not the equipment. It's the operator.....dang it.

Now, I'm very happy with the tones I get. And in a live situation, I'm not sure the audience can hear the subtle changes (not sure I can either). But I do wish I could get that "Stand Up" sound on a few songs. Maybe I need a bongo (did I say that out loud).
