Alternative response: Can you get this sound with a P-bass?

Another response: One-trick ponies eat no-trick ponies for lunch

Eq sound on the bass

I watched the video that Infedelity posted--the guy put flat wound strings on the sunburst bass and demonstrated the EQ by playing a little then changing the settings of the EQ and then playing again. I must have junk speakers because I couldn't tell the difference in tone. Personally I don't like flatwound strings and that vid may just reinforce my not-likedness of them. I like how I invent words.

And since I'm giving my opinions-- I much prefered the sound of the two pickup Sterling I just bought over the sound of the one pickup Stingray I played at the music store. Am I now a bad person?:)

u aint bad. u just u. and i like u cause u know what u like. thats the whole game man. develop YOU. your sound. just make sure you really give everything a thorough going over before you move it aside. flats really are magical when you learn what they do, and when to use that for your own benefit. or you might just hate them and it aint your thing, and thats even cooler. i personally HHHHAAAATTTE jacos tone. just hate it. but it really works for him. well it did, i dont think hes using it anymore. no one could say he was ape-ing jamerson, thats for sure.

I often find this to be odd, a lot of people have come to see me live are always a little surprised as I tend to use a plectrum for a large amount of my stuff, they tend to fall into the classic "stingray is a slapping bass" I know a few of you have aluded to this already. Is a Stingray a one trick pony, NO way, would I use a Ray to sound like a Fender precision, personally no, I would use a Fender precision.

The EBMMStingray is a mighty tool, many, many things it is capable of, I use it because it sounds like no other..

Craig so true. I can definitely relate on the Jaco tone. I was so excited when I bought his solo album back in the 80s. I had never heard him. Just read about him. Put on the record and what the heck is going on with his tone. It took me quite awhile to get past it to appreciate his skill set.

Interestingly enough, many people love the Stingray for it's slap tone, but it is not my preferred slap tone (not that it's bad...). Different strokes for different folks.

I wonder what other "classic" basses are not "one trick ponies"?

(in the sense of "having their own characteristic tone")

I often hear the StingRay H referred to as a "one trick pony." I think my two StingRays have a very broad range of tone depending on how you EQ them. I have never understood that comment.

This sound bite is the equivalent of something you might expect a lame politician who's prone to the occassional falling over at public engagements and making other public gaffes to utter - we've all seen em I'm sure.

People who say thiis simply don't have a clue IMO. Their technique must be horribly limited and their ability to move simple controls must be highly compromised - it is their ability and technique which is in question not the instrument.

Should be dismissed as plain stupidity ;)

Sometimes versatility can be largely overrated though. You read reviews and that seems to be a comment or criticism that often comes up (lack of versatility). I find as I get older that sometimes getting a specific sound, a good sound that you like, can outweigh trying to get all the sounds. And that includes amps, cabs and effects too. It's so much easier to find what you're looking for when you know what you want!

That being said, I am really looking forward to getting my Big Al 5 SSS!! ;)

no bass is a one trick pony, all kinds of sounds you can get, using pick, fingers, playing next to the bridge, the neck ......

Go into your local Guitar Denter or other music retailer, and pull a Stingray H off the wall. I guarantee that you will find the highs and lows cranked and the mids cut.

People who don't know the first thing about 'Rays but think they do set the eq this way because in their limited understanding the 'Ray is a "slap bass." So they set what they think is a good slap eq curve and then wonder why it doesn't sound good for fingerstyle.

Between the 3-band onboard eq and a good eq section on an amp, you can do anything with a 'Ray. Throw a Tech-21 VT Bass stomp box in there, and you've got a whole universe of tones available to you.

Although I had an HH I played a variety of modern or classic rock on my Rays in the original single H setting. I always received compliments. The Markbass rig helps as well. I never liked the way my old Stinghray sounded through my old GK rig.

I can turn any bass into a one-trick pony and I'm weirdly proud of that.

friend, what you are talking about is "one pony turning tricks".

what we are talking about is something altogether different. maybe you should stick to the shallow end of the pool and get used to the water wingys first?

(sorry jack, but i had to make up for the compliment i gave you earlier today. it was really starting to eat away at me. i feel so much better now.)

flats really are magical when you learn what they do,

+1... some people can't stand flats... I personally can't stand rounds.... "izshnt dat weird?" :)

i personally HHHHAAAATTTE jacos tone. just hate it. but it really works for him. well it did, i dont think hes using it anymore. no one could say he was ape-ing jamerson, thats for sure.

Thank you Craig... I no longer feel alone in the world on this subject. Amazing player, amazing artist... can't stand his tone not even a little bit.

Regarding the "One Trick Pony" and urban internet myth.... I find it really weird that even the friggin' interweb can't agree on what that trick is!!!

I remember a thread on another large bass forum talking about the midrangey-ness of the Stingray... and then less than a week later a discussion of how scooped it was.... well which is it folks? You can't be midrangey and scooped at the same time.

It has been proven time and again the Stingray can do anything.... if it can back the music of...

  • Sade
  • Lincoln Park
  • Rage Against The Machine
  • Red Hot Chilli Peppers
  • Kenny Chesney
  • Paul Young
  • The Brothers Johnson
  • Queen
  • Peter Gabriel
  • Bruce Springsteen
  • Journey
  • Foreigner
  • AC/DC
  • Chic
  • Jethro Tull
  • Jamiroquai

To name just a very few (in more than a few very different genres), it can probably do anything. Think about it any bass that can back Sade and then be picked up by another player and back ROTM is no one trick pony!

I think my 20th actually made me coffee this morning... not quite sure but I have suspicions....

I think we're done here. :D

One trick pony or not. It's been the most consistent pony in my stable over the years. Not necessarily the same pony but the same breeders pony. I'm a single p/u guy at heart I am finding out.
