A short time after I joined the forum last year I heard of the Bongo for the very first time and i became somewhat curious. I really liked the unusual design of this bass - especially the 5 string version, since his overall shape has the best matching proportions i've ever seen on a bass. I don't know how often I looked at that wonderful blue Bongo 5 on the EBMM web page.

I knew I had to have a Bongo 5. (Even if I would not play bass I could become a collector just because of that great design). Never played one, never felt one. I didn't care. Either HH or HS. And cause the Bongo 5 is a rare kind of the species bass in Europe - I'd guess 50% of the EU Bongo 5s are in strummers ownership ;) - I was ready to take any Bongo. Any pickup config, any color.

So I was rather excited when DTG offered a marvellous Bongo 5 HHP on behalf of Grand Wazoo in the for sale thread. Some days have passed since then, many mails with two really nice guys (thanks Francis, thanks Dave) were exchanged and now I can call this wonderful Bongo my own since tuesday evening. :D

What can i say after owning that beast for 2 days?

Playability is really great. The smaller string spacing in comparison with my SR is no problem. I can even play faster on that neck than on my SR. (Some days ago I had the chance to put my fingers on some EB 5 stringers (Big AL, 25th, Bongo) and I liked the f-l-a-t Bongo neck by far the best. So I knew I was on the right track with my order)

The sound is awesome. All sounds are awesome. All nuances of sounds are awesome. I am currently playing with the EQ flat to get used to the endless possibilities of the HH-balance pot + piezo/magnetic balance pot. (well, i nearly unroofed the house when playing with the EQ bass knob...). I will still need some time to discover all the different sounds the Bongo can deliver. Hope I don't get lost in that n-dimensional space.

Excerpt from a mail to the Grand Wazoo:
This morning when my wife left the house I still had an hour of time to play. Play loud. PLAY LOUD. I could not stop smiling. You can use the Bongo as a wrecking ball to tear down a house! There's an output -so deep and mighty- i've never heard from my Stingray. And even my Stingray has a great sound.

I am not the mega experienced bass player with some decades of know how and having played 100+ different basses. (I re-started playing bass last year after a break of nearly 30 years). But I know what I like and I really like the Bongo.

Damn, I am now in the ownership of a Bongo 5. The Bongo got me!

Congratulations! :)

The HHp sure is a Studio-on-a-Strap™ ... besides lifting roofs, sinking smaller continents and being a chick-magnet. I hope you enjoy the journey, keep us posted!

Congratulations - awesome bass.

You should try the piezo - about 30% is good (I took A Douglas's advice on this) - really gets the mind rays going :p ........... adds some apparent warmth to the sound.

I hear where you're coming from on the bass boost - there is so much available

Congratulations!!! Good score. I cant wait to hear it. Let me know if you need some beginner 5 string switch tipps. Here is one free of charge :)

Practice any D, E or G you like scale across 2 octaves starting on the B. Dont forget to lightly rest your thumb down too E sting when you play the D and on the A string when you play the G. Doing this helped me get my head around muting.
