I heard those Roland Cube amps sound pretty good.

The HD400 is not just a pedal board. It's an amp modeler and effects unit. The main reason I suggested it is that it has a headphone output jack which will allow to PRACTICE.

I also suggested this device based on your other posts where you stated you would hate to spend money now to then have to sell whatever you bought once you got a Mark V.

Thing is, you will need effects to get those JP sounds you love, not just a Mark V and an EBMM JP. So why not start now and get a unit that had effects and amp modeling so you can start practicing now, but will also be useful to you once you have a Mark V.

Just my opinion ...

Honestly, I suggest getting a Roland Micro Cube (really one of the best practice amps!) and hold off on getting all the crazy gear for a bit. Take time to learn the guitar and develop your chops. I suggest getting lessons with the money. Keep in mind, Petrucci doesn't need a JP or a Mark V to sound like Petrucci; that equipment just complements his playing VERY well. At this point Chops > Gear.

i know but but but i want his stuff :'( I'm sure chops mean building speed, tech, etc. I'm actually pretty decent considering how long I've been playing. The only songs I know are DT songs

The BlackStar rocks. A used one of these is right up your alley BUGERA: MAGICIAN another option is one of Roland's Cube amps JP used it as a practice amp for a while. For your purpose the cube would probably be good idea.

Dude where do you live? Go try out some amps, lots of choices. For what you want to spend Black Star is awesome and the Line 6 stuff would serve you well with built in modeling, also Egnater Tweaker, my favorite, and there is the Fender G-Dec I think the new version is cool. Also any cheap amp like a Fender Frontman on sale at GC for 99.00 with a medium range multi effect pedal like an Digitech RP-255 149.00, just do it and start playing Please Or if not send me your JPX and I will

There is also used gear probably marked down 60% from the original Street prices Via private sales and even in shops. Geez, If you were up here I'd give you a VOX 30W. If you look around, Something will come up. No worries

At this point you're going to need to take your JPX and go to your local store and try all them out. I haven't used one, but heard they sound great.

Each one may sound different to you and/or react differently. Plus I think they each have different features (clean, OD, distortions, effects, etc ...).

Get the 20 XL. If you want to go nuts get the 40 xl or 80 xl...these have a 3rd channel and more watts but IMO you will be more than ok with the 20 xl

Forgive me, but you said it'd take you a single pay period to come up with enough money for a Mesa Mark V. If that is the case, then buying a $1000 macbook shouldn't be a problem.

Spend some time getting a nice tone and you won't be disappointed. Oh ... and practice your ass off. Seriously, if you're dead set on soloing like Petrooch, don't let a day go by where you haven't practiced.
