I prefer charcoal myself for a smokier flavor. But whatever floats your boat!
But Rob you'd have to play a bucker guitar man to do that!! Hahahahahahaha

Well, most chrome pickup covers are really just polished nickel, they aren't actually chrome plated, so it won't flake off. The first one we did actually started melting (not one of these, I ended up making it into a 'distressed' type finish) but it didn't flake.Beautiful result
It brings up a few questions - such as would the chrome flake off?
did you learn control over which colours came out?
and how do you get a cover onto a pick-up without it becoming microphonic - hot paraffin in the cover first?
You've taken this quite seriously, which I must doff my cap to.Well, most chrome pickup covers are really just polished nickel, they aren't actually chrome plated, so it won't flake off. The colour depends on how long you heat it, the black parts are where it was heated the longest, but I wasn't paying enough attention to know which order the colours showed up
I haven't installed a cover, but usually the pickup is potted, then the cover is installed and it is potted again. I'm pretty sure the pickup itself is usually encased in wax inside the cover, but I'm not certain.
I will be putting them on a guitar soon, if I can find some pickups that will fit (Different brand covers have different spacings, even if they're both normal spaced or F-spaced!)You've taken this quite seriously, which I must doff my cap to.
If you can get the potting worked out, I'd love to see you get a pick-up onto a fitting plank.
Blowtorched ones sound better.
