So I went to my local GC to check out what axis models they had in stock. I picked up a Black Magic Crystal axis, asked to plug it in, and started to noodle around. It felt great, sounded awesome, and the neck was perfect. So as I gave the guitar a once over, i noticed a stress crack at the neck joint, also a chip of paint off the headstock. I asked the Salesman what he could do for me. I wont pay full price for a "new " guitar that isn't mint. Under further inspection the GC dude noticed the crack in the headstock went all the way around the circumference of the neck. He said "we can't sell you this guitar." They are going to cntact musicman and see what the deal is on damaged goods. It's obvious some idiot dropped the guitar in the store. GC should really take care of the high end instruments, keep an eye on all the people that walk in and manhandle 2000 dollar guitars. They're gonna call me back after they contact musicman. If I can get a deal on it, a really good deal, I'll buy it. The funny thing is that it still played Perfectly, maybe the damage is not that bad?

Really, people with this much disrepect for other people's property pee me off (I'm talking about the douche who dropped it).
I think it's good of GC to not want to sell you the guitar. I know of a lot of guitar shops (where I live), that would have gladly sold you the guitar, with a bit of discount ofcourse, and then , should problems arise, just tell you to your face "yeah but you knew what you were buying, so we can't do anything for you".
Still, if it's just a chip in the headstock, not near the tuners (risk of cracking further)...it shouldn't affect the stability of the guitar I think.
Still, bummer that you didn't get to take it home!

The Crack starts right under the tuner for the low E, and goes around the neck right to the middle of the bolts that screw the floyd rose nut in place. It's a hairline fracture, I don't know if it can be repaired, but I think Musicman will replace necks if you send them the damaged neck. If the give me a blowout price it's comin home with me

Last I heard, the GC policy is to allow any person access to play any guitar.....that includes the Saturday afternoon Junior High kids that stop in to mess around.
The horrible way this guitar was treated, should be a HUGE alarm going off for them saying, "Hey, maybe we should change our policy?".
I am sure MM Customer Service will make everything right. No doubt about that.

I have been in a GC maybe 5 times in total and they are HUGE stores. I think it would be impossible to have every staff member watching who grabs a guitar which in itself is a catch 22 as we all know we would be pissed if a salesman stood gawking while we were playing and would be thinking whats his problem, in my case I would be asking lol. I think they got the right idea with the Platinum Room and should always have a staff member inside as then no one would take offense. I hate to say it but there are more idiot adults then careless kids that cause these problems. bischero I hope they give you a great deal on it but as the guys stated already make sure that it is still under full warranty, as some stores sell scratch and dent items without one and I do not know GC policy though Slav probably has the buyers manual lol. Just make sure as if it is cracked past the finish and into the wood you are definitely going to need a new neck.

why should ebmm pay for repairing a damaged guitar? seems to me warranty work should only be for manufacture defects. i wouldnt expect toyota to fix my truck under warranty if someone ran into it while i was in a music store ....or wherever....

I do think that the floyd equipped guitars have more of a chance to crack or break because of the locking nut being installed straight through the neck. Too bad floyds couldn't just use the locking tuners and a string retainer. That would probably stop those types of cracks in the neck when manhandled.

The GC's I've visited in Upstate N.Y. MM's kept behind the counter and are escorted when someone want's a test ride. The small Guitar Shops where I live are the same and have high end Guitars behind the counter. It's really the best policy. I don't think MM should be responsible either and would call B.S. if any company is sending back the goods from obvious disregard.

Without a doubt Floyd as we all know they did not pull the guitar out of the case that way. It just seems that mostly everyone figures it is kids when in fact more adults are clueless and careless than kids will ever be, as I see it all the time. Just Friday when Mike was sitting on the stool playing my new Roller two guys in there 50s were hanging over his shoulder and I was watching as one had his leather jacket un-zipped and it was getting closer and closer to the body and I was just going to ask him to watch his jacket when he asked Mike if he could checkout the guitar in which Mike said no because it was not the stores and pointed to me. I am very cool when it comes to letting someone take a ride to the point bothers Mike as he does not like when guys ask to see someones personal guitar unless offered. But I learned a lesson some months back when a friend that comes in the store handed me back a new guitar with three little dings from strumming like a maniac with his nails in which I got an I told you so...

Interesting. When I walk in with a leather coat on (all winter), the first thing I do is find a home for the coat. Then I go looking for a guitar. Something I have noticed is that the musicman guitars have all found homes behind the guitar desk and anything over about $600 needs a ladder to get to. Nobody has ever denied me playing, but most of the sales people know me and that I treat any guitar I try like it's a $100k brittle heirloom. They know what I have at home too....
My EVH has both a stress crack by the neck joint and a crack behind the nut. I brought this to a famous tech who's done stuff for Slash and Paul McCartney. He told me to just keep playing it until it cracks because he can't do anything about it until it actually breaks. You don't want to put glue into something that isn't split. Anyway, that was 10 years ago. The neck still hasn't split. I don't know if that's relevant to your situation, but I figured the info couldn't hurt.
So I called the manager today and he said he was sending it back to Musicman. They decided it was a manufacturer defect. From what I saw I find it hard to believe that nobody dropped that guitar on the floor. The Paint was chipped off of the headstock. In my opinion it was mistreated. Funny thing, Of the 3 Axis guitars I played there, the balck magic crystal was setup and played better than the others, and the other had no cracks or blemishes. I also noticed that the Knob and the washer on tHe pickup switch were loose. Another sign of abuse. I abuse my own guitars but THEY'RE MINE!! They are not 2000 dollar guitars that I don't own. Music man should not be liable for this.

My bet is, they told you they'll send it back to MM to not look like tools because they know very well its not MM fault but their own, or rather one of their customers fault who dropped it. If they admit that a customer did it, that people go in there all the time, drop guitars, put them back on the rack and leave then no one would buy from them. Who knows, maybe that $2000 you like was dropped as well but for now shows no cracks....
