I really don't want this thread to decend into a "he said/she said" junior spat, spoiled by bitterness.

Simple fact I wasn't there, so i'll stick to celebrating the band and the players involved.

Did I spot the silverburst at 1:25 during the Aquiles Priester audition?

On Monday, Mike Mangini's Wikipedia page said something to the effect of, "On April 18, 2011, Mike Mangini joined Dream Theater as its new drummer." However, I just checked a moment ago and that statement no longer exists on the page. It has been replaced by one that says Mike was one of seven drummers to audition for the spot.

Just sayin', since everyone knows that if it's included in Wikipedia, it's a stone cold fact. :)

No matter who gets the gig, I will be looking forward to the band's next release.

Worth noting that Mike Mangini played on Mullmuzzler, Mullmuzzler 2 , and Elements of Persuation, and Peter Wildoer played on Static Impulse. Both have a proven track record with James’ material.

I love Marco Minnemann's playing too though, and his cookie monster shirt is a touch of genius. Nom nom nom....

Wow did not know that. The plot thickens! Of course JP knows Virgil from the G3 tours. this will be good no matter what. I love MP but these are are also world class so it is going to rock

"In October, Over the Edge Production wrapped principle photography on a feature length documentary for the legendary band Dream Theater. The movie is directed by Mike Leonard and sponsored by Roadrunner Records. In the film, we follow the bands journey after their drummer of 25 years, Mike Portnoy, leaves the band. Now, 7 of the world's best drummers compete to be part of this legendary progressive-rock group. We are currently in postproduction with the release expected in spring 2011. In addition to a nation-wide release, the film is rumored to air on television as a 3-part mini-series (official details TBA). Dream Theater fans are dying to know who the new drummer is, but it will be worth the wait. Soon fans will be able to watch history in the making through this highly anticipated movie.

Stay tuned for more updates at Over the Edge Productions | Creating Powerful Media All Over the World or right here on our blog."

Interesting.

Oh god, did they just make a reality show out of this???

uhmmm

Mike, that's like saying "Big Poppa, please don't let Dargin post any more teaser threads with prototypes because it creates extra drama" You know you eat it up as much as the rest of us! heheh

Personally, I think it's a great way for DT to increase exposure and garner publicity and possibly renewed interest from fans who have strayed, especially with all the "reality TV" that is out there and so incredibly popular.

Mangini is frikkin FAST, btw, I was wondering if he would be in there somewhere.

Those of you that know me know that I'm a diehard DT fan. Although I am saddened by the loss of MP, I am looking forward to what is to come. However, I must admit that the drama over this announcement is just downright silly. Just announce it already!

I am in full agreement with this statement. Just move on, find a drummer, record a record and go on tour! I will still support the band if they continue to make great music (I am sure they will), but this extra fluff is something I just can't get into. Save the drama for yo mama.

Kidding aside. Really looking forward to their new CD.

I am a little peeved at Petrucci since I was edited out as there were 8 of us and I got the gig and then opted out, he could of at least left me in the trailor-lmfao.

Seriously for someone that is musically inclined I must be the worst person to ever hold a pair of drumsticks, how many guys are also just awful with drums. Whoever gets this gig will all boil down to who fits in personality wise the best. I would have to believe since these are some of the greatest players on the planet how can you really choose, since I believe they are all pretty equal skill wise or they would not of gotten an invite. A very tough task to make a decision I would have to believe, also it is going to change someones life bigtime. Just like Ozzies new guitarist Gus G- I have seen the guy giving interviews in every major guitar mag as well as getting a ton of endorsements already all without hearing him even play a note yet.

Woah woah woah chaps, let's not see the drummer mystique as a negative. I love the fact that the band has kept the drummer position a mystery for so long.
I don't mind the build up and mystique. It's turning it into a reality tv fiasco and a few of the comments that got me. Also, like I said before, we'll never know the REAL details and how personal the issues are between MP and the guys of DT. The whole situation gets even wierder and more confusing when you hear why A7X didn't keep him on. I doubt I'll ever understand it.

That being said, Dream Theater will still be my all time favorite band and I'm super-psyched about the new album. I'm not worried at all about them picking a new drummer as they have the best of the best to choose from. And as much as I hate reality TV I'm sure I'll watch and actually enjoy the mini-series.

maybe im a bit out of the loop, and maybe theres something thati dont get but i dont understand what everyone's problem is? mike portnoy's shoes are a massive pair to fill, and in my opinion, a group of top 8 finalist drummers to be auditioned for the spot makes them 8 of the best just on reliable heresay.

as for the issue of causing drama and withholding information about the identity of the new drummer (is that what everyones problem is?) it might be because they're not 100% sure? if i was in their position, i'd have to be 100% at the point of no return before making a huge announcement such as who is filling portnoys booties. did that occur to anyone?

i really wouldnt read too much into that. i know portnoy might seem like a dream drummer for any metal band but im assuming (speculating) that avenged 7fold perhaps didnt want to be associated as a dream theater 2.0 type band. a7xs latest album did have a hint of dream theater in it in my opinion and pehaps they thought it was going down a path they didnt want to take. as i said, i wouldnt read much into it. they probably just want to stay true to themselves

A7X singer said a few weeks before they stopped using him that the band was very un happy and did not agree with how MP and DT handled the announcment and the things that followed. He also said that MP did not give then advanced notice that he was leaving DT and that they loved having him on tour but that at that time there were no talks about him becoming an officla band member.
