I can't say enough great things about the tc electronic flashback delay! Install the Steve Morse tone print and you'll be in delay heaven. This thing is just crazy good.....

What ??? Nobody's using Electro Harmonix ?

For me the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai is the best compromise between sound, versatility and price. With this pedal, you have :

  • Several delays (echo, reverse, delay + modulation ...)
  • Tap Tempo
  • A looper (30 s)
  • 8 presets
  • cheap (167 € in Europe)
  • Made in NYC
For me it's really important to be able to store several presets. With my band, we have some song where the delay has to be perfectly programmed (songs with samples for instance).

I like the EH Memory Man. But EH basically shot themselves in the foot with the way they handled the MM Deluxe. Especially when they popularized the original model, discontinued it, then realized it was a total mistake and flooded the market with a far inferior reproduction of the original. Steve Morse uses the originals and they do sound great. If you can find one at a good price and good condition, I'd say nab it for sure, but they're hard to find. I tried hunting Ebay and Craigslist for one when I was making my pedalboard way back when, but I just gave up and settled for an MXR CC.

I have the TC FlashbackToneprint - a good pedal (Well if it's good enough for Steve Morse and JP - it's good enough for me!!)
Has a few little quirks
Battery life is ohhh about 2 minutes, and I kept hitting the pre set knobs when using it live. I had to invent a "Spudguard" to stop my size 9's hitting them when using the stomp button - has a looper built into it too!

What kind do you want? Digital Delay? Tape Delay? Analog Delay?

Well true tape delay will be totally impractical to get a hand of, and expensive. But there are a lot of models out there for tape delay.

For digital delay, I like simplicity. If you need just ONE setting for delay, the BOSS DD-3 can't get you wrong. The Nova Delay has more options, ESPECIALLY if you need tap tempo. TC Electronics makes outstanding modulation and delay effects, you can't go wrong in that department. There's the wonderful Nova Delay and also the new stombox artists series that Morse and JP are into (cant remember the name) Or you can be like Joe B and use a TC 2290 in the rack. Which is a bit ludicrous, but if you got the $$$ why not.

When I had my bigger set up before I moved overseas, I used a digital delay (DD-3) for my distorted tones, and used an Analog delay for my clean tones. There's the MXR Carbon Copy which is a solid workhorse analog delay at a cheap price. The AD9 which is decent for slapback but has limited delay range. You can find an old Memory Man (not the reissue garbage) and if you're really willing to drop the cash you can get a Toneczar Echoczar. The most beautiful analog delay I've ever heard, bar none.

Being more specific about your needs and your budget will help. :)

ill be playing at home and not gigging. atleast that i know of. im really out of the loop since i havent played in 15 plus years. as far as budget 200-250 tops. nothing too fancy but i want good sound and true bypass to not interupt my tone. after doing the research and reading in this thread i think it comes down to the MXR carbon copy, Boss DD3 or the HardWire DL8. i think one of those would be a good starting point and could possible get something different in the future or not and be totally happy with what i have.

Hi Big Paul,

I agree with Gio, the Boss DD3 is essential. I also play 80's rock, exactly the same bands that you mentioned, and I played it back then with a DD3. I lent it out years ago, and never got it back. I just bought a new one on Friday and I made the right choice for that genre of music. No need to get the DD7.

It was a tough choice between the DD3 and the MXR carbon copy for me, too. I'm happy with the DD3.

Good luck...

thans again for you input man. you have been a great help to me here:)

I got a Hardwire DL-8 off ebay for fairly cheap. Incredible built quality and tonal sweetness, all kinds of digital and analog modes. But you do need a good power supply as it's 18V and will eat batteries for breakfast. It also has a very long nice looper.

Hey Big Paul,

If you're just getting warmed up again after a 15 year hiatus, I highly recommend licklibrary.com dvds. The ones that teach you five songs from a particular band. Jamie Humphries is the best instructor, and he plays Axis guitars. His Van Halen Volume 2 is essential.

Note to Jamie....please make Van Halen volume 3 with some stuff from the Hagar years. Poundcake, Spanked, Man on a Mission...

If you order one, you better be ready to wait a month for it to arrive. I'm serious. But you should check out the website. Good luck, Paul...

Delay - this is by far the MOST important effect there is (unlike any other), and really should be considered like an amp or guitar!! With that said the delay's purpose is to "mimick" your amp's tone/sound, how important can that be?

I've had or tried most all of them, being in Van Halen, Foreignor, Boston, Aerosmith, Journey type trib bands over the years. There is one delay that stands out way, way, way above all the others as far as quality of repeats - that is the Eventide Harmonizer.

However, if price is an issue than there are a couple others (pedals) that are affordable and do an excellent job; Damage Control Timeline (now Strymon Timeline) and Eventide TimeFactor.

When it comes to delay, spend a little extra is worth every penny!

I didn't get that one yet. I just ordered one of the Steve Vai's a few weeks ago (still waiting!!!), and I'll order the Satriani next. Or maybe Def Leppard, which has Jamie Humphries instructing. They break down every single guitar part in easy-to-understand chunks. These are the most useful dvd's I've found.

By the way, you can only play them in your computer, since they are coded for play in european dvd players. But that's no big deal.

There are tons of options out there, but I have had my DD3 for quite a long time and I think it works great. I am definitely looking into getting the TC flashback as well to implement on my slowly growing board.
