Hi guys,

Been lurking for a while and the EBMM "group" seems pretty darn knowledgeable and helpful... so here goes!

I have come across a new Albert Lee SSS BFR in Black (with Roasted neck)... Looks great-- reminds me of the black/Black rosewood strat ('79) my buddy lent me to practice with when I was a kid and couldn't afford a nice guitar...

The issue is: I cannot find a reference to this model "anywhere"! Not here in the forums, not on EBMM site.. no where...so if any of you know:

Is it a "typical" BFR Albert Lee? (i.e. "tone-block")?

Are there any other changes on it that make it an "odd ball"?... I'm just surprised there isn't more info on this guitar....

I do also have a Silo Spec SSS that I have my eye on as a "back-up" (sunburst, black pic-guard...drool, drool drool ;))

I am basically looking for a passive SSS for my little Trower/Otis/ blues "noodlings"...

I almost went for a Luke-- but I want a passive pick-up set for now...

Any thoughts/opinions/suggestions from you guys would be great!

No there is no tone block in it. Just look at the specs of the regular Al and that is the specs on that. The difference is that it has the roasted package which included that special paint job roasted maple neck and ebony fret board

Thanks Otto!

Ya, I sort of figured that-- even though they put a BFR logo on it...

So what do you think? SSS-wise? Silo-spec or AL? (DiMar or SD/ Gun-oil neck vs finished)?

Any opinons?

It is a BFR because it is a special run. BFR does not equal tone block. As far as which one. The are different guitars. The Al is LTD so I say the AL because the SS will always be there. Unless of course you come across a roasted SS then you really have a problem! :) The Al may have to much twang in the bridge but a pup swap can fix that. I have an SS and an HH Al I love the feel of the HH Al to the point that I would buy a regular Al just to have it.

My other dilemma is that with NAMM on the way the LukeIII will be here and HSS on a mahogany body with an All RW neck is something I have been wanting for years!

Ya, I really was leaning Luke up until recently-- the Luke III may be what sways me for a next guitar after this one... (I do want an EMG/active equipped guitar for some other stuff I do).

But, yes-- I agree as well, the special run AL is hard to pass up and I love the "70's/80's) Black/Black PG look... and the AL owners (that I have come across) all seem to be unquestionably happy with their AL purchases!

Your other guitars are all the gun-oiled neck, correct?-- yet you and the others on the forum seem very excited about the Roasted neck (finished)...

I suppose it comes down to what I've read so often around here: you need more than one! So I think my collection will start off with a winner either way. ;) will post pics soon...

thanks OTTO! :D

I did, thanks Steve!

But I'm over in California...US.

Oh well... what did you think of that guitar vs silo Spec SSS or vs any AL SSS?

Thanks!

We all love the gun oiled necks but there is something about the finish EBMM uses when they do actually finish a neck that is different than other brands. It doesn't get sticky! It is awesome. The roasted neck is extra sturdy and the Ebony fretboard is awesome. You can't get ebony on just any EBMM model!

By the way the Luke III won't have EMGs in it
