A while ago, when I bought the AL, it arrived with MM90s in place and an extra toggle installed for doing.....something. Anyways, I knew I wanted it set up with MY pickups, so before I gave it a fair shot, I dumped in a set of my favorite single coils and Tone Zone S. It was great - a really excellent guitar.

Now, after time has passed, I have been searching for more.....well, I don't know what to call it....something more in my tone. I tried about a gajillion or so ODs and distortion pedals and just wasn't nailing it. At all. So then I started messing more with the actual knobs on my guitar - you know, those original pieces designed to help you tone shape your sound? :p Well, I was getting closer. So I started thinking (always dangerous), and I decided "Hey, what about those MM90s I took out?" "NO - can't use those - they're black and you hate black plastic on every guitar" "Oh yeah. Too bad they're not white" SOOOO - why not make them white?

I'll pause here - as anyone who has ever desired white P90 or MM90 covers knows that the search for these is akin to finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. And the ONLY place to even, allegedly, carry them had, well let's say, not so great of reviews out there. But I worked retail for a while so I always approach every merchant with a try 'em once and give 'em a chance mentality if it feels right. So, I placed my order with Guitar Jones online - without ever talking to a person - and they arrived at my door - as scheduled. And they were perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them or use them again myself!

Now where was I, oh yeah - white. Well getting a new white guard (the old one was pearloid that had not necessarily aged well, IMO) from EBMM was easy as pie. Actually easier - ever try to make a pie? But I digress. In any event, with assistance form A.J. (thanks again, A.J.!!!) on the wiring front, I finally, after many months, put it all together about a week ago. Let's just say the AL with MM90s is pure bliss and leave it at that. All the tones I was looking for were inside there (and in some pedals I acquired in the mean time. I discarded about a dozen along the way and whittled down to 5 total - aw, what the heck - I'll put a pic of that below too).

One thing I discovered about the MM90s is that with the Volume and Tone on the guitar rolled back to about 8-9, I was getting all the tones of my old favorite single coils that I love. Excellent! In any event, the guitar is amazing. It is the perfect compliment to my HH AL and it's never leaving me. Ever! Thanks EBMM, for making such an amazing guitar! And so glad I hit my head hard enough against the wall to realize that I'd been sitting on all the pieces to those fantastic tones all along (well, except for 2 new pedals ).

I would apologize for the long post, but, for crying out loud, this is an internet forum - where else am I gonna do this???

Here she is with the "makeover":

Nice post - too long? - nah!!!

I'm in love with my JP6 at the mo, but will no doubt give the MM90 AL a good pasting soon.

Are the covers the same as a P90 cover?

So what are those pedals on your board

Yeah - I guess I should elaborate on that.

L to R:

Freakshow Brown Rabbit - It's a Rat variation/Landgraff Mo'D inspired pedal. Although it has it's own unique sound apart from those. I totally love it with my Ray! I think it would be great with any amp with a very clean tone running.

Suhr Shiba - wonderfully smooth overdrive. I tested close to 60 ODs - this one was perfect for me.

Aquapuss MK II with delay doubler mod - Analog delay with up to ~600 ms of delay now. Also has the greatest decay tone when playing with moderate to lots of dirt. It's very 60's and beautiful.

Korg Pitchblack - Tuner

Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster - secret weapon! Why more people don't use these with their single coil guitars, I'll never understand. It has a 3-way slider switch on it that changes the resonant frequency. What does that matter? It can make the input signal of your single coils appear to be humbuckers to everything after it in the chain. SO, when you have it out in front (where it really needs to be to work properly) and you have it set to "Modern", you can get these amazing HB tones without switching guitars (or even pickup positions). It really does work well. Especially effective in the bridge position, IMO. You can also set it to the middle position for just a straight clean boost. And it's a very nice clean boost, at that. And it's cheap as heck. Like I said - why more guitarists don't use them - I don't get it. YMMV. ;)

Yeah - the SD booster is a great pedal. I bought one really cheap - second hand in the UK. My mate visited and begged me to sell it to him - I did and regretted it ever since.

The mm90 pickup covers - are they (the ones you got) listed as MM covers or are the P90 covers the same?

Yea, that happens sometimes. You have something under your hands that's already perfect but you THINK you can make it better theoretically in your head. I sold my Silo Special and 20th Silo to get something else, which did not even work out! Now I miss the Silo Special...plus I would have converted it back to stock singles if I still had it.

Anyway, those MM90s are pretty cool. I played a El Dorado Gold AL MM90 with the full rosewood neck, and that thing was really cool. Wish I had ton of money so I could have all these different axes.

The board also looks nice! I've looked into the Brown Rabbit before as well. What other pedals did you compare this one to...or what did it replace. Also loving that LE Shiba! Eventually I want one as well, but right now I'm looking for sort of the tone that the Wampler Pinnacle has or the Brown Rabbit or the CMAT Brownie...but I am pretty much set on the Pinnacle.

I tried out the CMAT Brownie (even bought one) but it doesn't have nearly the amount of dirt or bottom end that the FSBR does. Not by a long shot. I also tried CMAT Ratified. Meh. Closer to the FSBR though, I would say. I also played a Landgraff Mo'D - which truly is a fantastic pedal. But I just couldn't justify pulling the trigger due to $$$ and, well, let's just say philosophical differences. ;)

The FSBR has a mode where the breakup takes you right to the edge of flubbing (and can if you want it to) but it is really a ton more versatile as well than any of the others.

For mild to pretty thick OD I played over 50 pedals. The Shiba won hands down. It is so smooth - it is heavy cream in a pedal. Love it!!!

Yea I really like the Shiba...I test drove one for a while and to me it was like an Andy Timmons tone in a box. I said that somewhere before, but yea, with the gain all the way up it is great. I'm just addicted to distortion hehe...all kinds!

Oh boy, this is a thread I can totally agree with! I loved my first AL with MM90's that I ordered a second almost immediately. I still prefer it by far to my Fedner Deluxe. Incredible tones clean or crunchy. Very clear and growls with OD. I do prefer one of mine over the other but it's more about the different wood combos. Either way, MM90's I like better than the Axis pups. They're that good.

That's a gorgeous guitar! I wish EBMM would offer autumn redburst again but I'm guessing that the animal that they get the red from is extinct now. :D
