A while ago, when I bought the AL, it arrived with MM90s in place and an extra toggle installed for doing.....something.
Anyways, I knew I wanted it set up with MY pickups, so before I gave it a fair shot, I dumped in a set of my favorite single coils and Tone Zone S. It was great - a really excellent guitar.
Now, after time has passed, I have been searching for more.....well, I don't know what to call it....something more in my tone. I tried about a gajillion or so ODs and distortion pedals and just wasn't nailing it. At all. So then I started messing more with the actual knobs on my guitar - you know, those original pieces designed to help you tone shape your sound?
Well, I was getting closer. So I started thinking (always dangerous), and I decided "Hey, what about those MM90s I took out?" "NO - can't use those - they're black and you hate black plastic on every guitar" "Oh yeah. Too bad they're not white" SOOOO - why not make them white?
I'll pause here - as anyone who has ever desired white P90 or MM90 covers knows that the search for these is akin to finding the proverbial needle in the haystack. And the ONLY place to even, allegedly, carry them had, well let's say, not so great of reviews out there. But I worked retail for a while so I always approach every merchant with a try 'em once and give 'em a chance mentality if it feels right. So, I placed my order with Guitar Jones online - without ever talking to a person - and they arrived at my door - as scheduled. And they were perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them or use them again myself!
Now where was I, oh yeah - white. Well getting a new white guard (the old one was pearloid that had not necessarily aged well, IMO) from EBMM was easy as pie. Actually easier - ever try to make a pie? But I digress. In any event, with assistance form A.J. (thanks again, A.J.!!!) on the wiring front, I finally, after many months, put it all together about a week ago. Let's just say the AL with MM90s is pure bliss and leave it at that. All the tones I was looking for were inside there (and in some pedals I acquired in the mean time. I discarded about a dozen along the way and whittled down to 5 total - aw, what the heck - I'll put a pic of that below too).
One thing I discovered about the MM90s is that with the Volume and Tone on the guitar rolled back to about 8-9, I was getting all the tones of my old favorite single coils that I love. Excellent! In any event, the guitar is amazing. It is the perfect compliment to my HH AL and it's never leaving me. Ever! Thanks EBMM, for making such an amazing guitar! And so glad I hit my head hard enough against the wall to realize that I'd been sitting on all the pieces to those fantastic tones all along (well, except for 2 new pedals
).
I would apologize for the long post, but, for crying out loud, this is an internet forum - where else am I gonna do this???
