Thought I'd try a different take on a Shell guard, this is Red Tortoise. Looks much better in person

Figures, no BigAL templates......

You can either send them your pick guard to use as a template or you can do a tracing of yours and send it to them. Sending the actual pick guard is probably going to be more exact though.

And they also carry the red tort.

I held back from them because their pic sample was pretty vague and looked like it was just red and black but if it has the amber in the color it certainly beats sending a pickguard as a template and have an extra charge as I did.

It is hard to tell from their sample pics. I ordered a clear from them and had them send me a small brown tort remnant so I could see the actual color. The brown tort looks good but I'm thinking of something more like the translucent tort pattern that's used on accoustic guitars. I have the clear on it now but I think a darker pg color gives the honeyburst more contrast.

That is just dead sexy! Thinking of doing something similar on the PDN Big Al 5 SSS I got yesterday from TPB. The guys were great and she should be here Friday...Can't wait! Have to admit I haven't been this anxious to get a new bass in a while. Looking forward to putting her through her paces! Very curious to hear how she compares with the pair of 25th Anniversary Basses I had and my Stingray 5's.... Review and pics to follow!

Peace,

Works great. Nice combo!
Thanks Rod
See? I said that over on the guitar side, tort would look better than black but oh no, they all said I was nuts!

Great job, looks fabulous!
Thanks, this is a good finish to change up on. When some asks me if I'm nuts I say "hell yeah"

Got mine about 2 weeks ago and I can tell you it sounds and plays as sweet as it looks. I had heard they made 2 of them so I guess now we know where they both are.................your house and mine!!!!

(I posted pics up in another NBD thread......)

Here's one with a standard EBMM Tort guard on it. I quickly put this guard on it just after receiving it (back when it had the first neck that snuck out of the factory with those pesky frets on it) to see how it would look and I took a few pics of it.

I'm not sure how red the standard EBMM Tort guard is compared to the one Laneline ordered but....here it is.

Interesting... I knew they only made a few in trying to find one but I did not know there may be only 2 of them!! Too cool... I also just saw in another thread that you also own a YYS? I own #49!! I guess we have similar tastes and similar stables. I can only hope that the PDN Big Al becomes my second desert island bass. I feel like with these 2 there probably is no ground I can't cover. I am very excited to get the Big Al after lusting for one for over a year now. I was in when I read what BP had to say about them but wanted to experience one for myself. I got to play a 4 string SSS in a Guitar Center but it had dead strings and one of the pickups was not working. The setup was godawful and the experience was inadequate to make a decent call. I bought this one totally in a leap of faith after my gut said to go for it. I currently play Stingray 5's for my 5 string work and the fact that the Big Al supposedly has that tone plus the flexibility of the others pushed me over the edge to get the Big Al over a PDN Stingray 5. I KNOW down in my soul already that I made the right choice and can't wait to confirm that! Play yours in good health!

Peace,

T
