I have a Ernie Ball 100th Anniversary NAMM show edition that I got brand new when they came out. I played it a bit, put it back in the case, and there it sat for the last 8 years. I had quit playing right after I got it for a number of reasons beyond my control (long story). Anyway, I'm back to playing for the last 4 months or so, shedding for several hours a day with great results. I just broke out the MM yesterday and set it up. I've been playing it some, but just right off the bat, I think I liked my old 70's MM with a wood neck better. I dunno, maybe it's just a matter of getting used to the sound of a graphite neck, and there are advantages to them. I NEED to have a Music Man Stingray, but I'm just in the mulling over whether to sell this one or not based on whether I come to like the whole graphite sound or not kind of stage right now. I would really love to know the value of this very rare, mint condition bass whether I decide to hold on to it or not. Anybody out there have some solid info on this? Thanks in advance! P.S. I'm new to this forum as of today, and I think the Stingray is one of the 3 most important basses ever, if not the ONLY 3! That includes a Jazz and a P by the way.

So why respond?

First off, I have never joined a forum, tweeted, Facebooked, or any of that stuff, especially the forums because whenever I land on one to try to grab some info on something, there are responses like yours. Quick little cheap shots. You can't relate, why? I believe I gave a detailed post. Great for you if you also have one, but if you have no idea what they're worth in mint condition, keep it to yourself. Also, being new to forums, I didn't intentionally make it a poll. I was lead to that option, and having no idea whether to include that in the message or not, just did it. Try not to tear me too big of a new one. Newbie mistake I guess. But don't mistake me for a newbie on the bass.-doingittodeath

Also, please excuse the spelling mistake on "lead", I know it's led. Please excuse the "poll gaffe" too. -doingittodeath P.S. and I HATE to say this, but once again, don't mistake me for a beginner on the bass. I checked out strummer's web page and I have an idea we're coming from two COMPLETELY different places musically. With this forum stuff, it's easy to make fun of a guy who you wouldn't be so smart with if you were sitting side to side, each with a bass in his hands. Please do not take that for bragging. That's NOT the point I'm trying to make here. -doingittodeath

Take a deep breath, strummer is coming off a rough one with kevins. Your bass is worth whatever you can get for it.

Maybe my http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-basses/42214-stingray-sound-examples.html can help you to decide whether you really need to find out what it's worth on the used market or whether you rather happily keep playing a great sounding and looking StingRay :D

Cheers...

Oh, and regarding the level of playing of forumites... there are a couple of bloody amateurs on this board, like me and Strummer, but you might also run into some big shots like Sterling Ball, Ed Friedland or Steve Lukather. So, nobody automatically assumes that you're a beginner on bass.

The best bet would be to keep an eye on eBay and see what a bass like that goes for, if a 100th happens to come up. With today's economy, it's really hard to know. Obviously, it's a buyer's market, so the value might be less than it might have been a few years ago.

A rough guide might be to look at "regular" used Stingray sale prices and add something like 50% to 75% more. That's just a guess though.

If you can afford to, keep it until the economy improves - you won't get what it's worth now. Actual value? I have no idea, an appraiser might be able to help out there.

BTW, nobody called you out on your bass playing ability. Ye doth protest too much. Me, I'm a self-taught hack.

Thanks!

Ah, I know nobody called me out on my playing. It's just that I tend to overreact sometimes, especially when I see forums and so many of the replies are quotes from books and quotes from other musicians, and have nothing to do with what you posted or asked for guidance or info on. BTW I would NEVER talk mess with Sterling Ball, Ed Friedland, or Steve Lukather for crying out loud, LOL! Not even if they said the grass is blue or the sky is bright red. Monsters, all of them.-doingittodeath

It will be worth what others are willing to pay for it.

Set a price, if it doesn't sell then you're asking is too much. Reduce accordingly until it sells. There's your value.

you can make fun of my playing...I sure do. THe problem is that this could be sort of a thinly veiled for sale thread and we get lots of those...It was a different poll but that is waht makes forums good. Try not to overreact and lets have fun
