Rob, good to see the pics of Tom link on your signature. I think alot of us check on him periodically. He rules. :) I remember not so long ago when he looked sort of like an alien. Thankfully, we can joke about it now, but those were scary times.

not to hijack, but I remember reading that thread a year or two back.....it was heartbreaking. I have a little girl and she has always been healthy (thank god) - but the story hit home....as it would with any parent. I honestly had a hard time reading it...very emotional. I'm glad everything worked out for you. Didn't BP hook you up with a guitar or something?

Great thread! Well....here are 11 albums that affected my life and explanations for each. Some of these are obvious because they influenced me at some point on guitar. Some affected the way I wrote music. Some just gave me a love for music in general.

-------------------------------------
(no particular order, although #1 was THE most influencial album ever for me.)

1. Van Halen - 1984
I saw the Jump video and thought "that is the coolest guy I've ever seen in my life". I bought the album and instantly wanted to play guitar.

2. King's X - Faith Hope Love
Being a Christian, I heard these guys and thought "wow, they don't suck".:D Ty is still one of my heroes.

3. Pearl Jam - Ten
A complete breakaway from the 80s stuff I had been listening to. I still love these guys.

4. Star Wars soundtrack
It's just awesome. I mean, lightsabers are awesome.

5. Living Colour - Time's Up
The first time I heard jazz chords in a rock setting. Just blew my mind.

6. Steve Vai - Flexable
The guy was 24 and just playing this amazingly difficult, yet not mindless stuff. Incredibly raw feel and recording, which was lost after the Roth years. Steve has done a dozen albums or more since then, but I believe 84-88 were his most interesting years. At least to me.

7. Beatles - sorry, I can't name only one. Best band ever

8. Queen - The Game
I got this from one of those Columbia House deals and was just floored by the oddness of some of the songs.

9. Aimee Mann - Lost In Space
This is in my top 5 albums ever. This album in my opinion is perfect in every account. Perfect writing and melodies.

10. Frank Zappa - Zoot Allures
I read about this album in some guitar magazine and I bought it because I thought Steve Vai was on it. He wasn't, but I loved it anyway and it was definitely like no rock I had heard before.

11. Michael Hedges - Live On The Double Planet
A friend took me to see Michael in 1990 for a Christmas present. I had never seen, nor have I seen since, anything like Hedges. I think I bought Live On The Double Planet first and had never heard guitar played so beautifully. It went so far past the weedly-weedly-wee guitar players I had been listening to for the 5 years prior. There are jillions of great players out there, but Michael really gave us something special. He could play, but it was about the song as a whole, not just waiting for your solo to come. Woman of the World and Two Days Old on that record just moved me so much and still do.

Danny totally with you on this one. I love "Woman of the World." I love his "All Along the Watchtower" as much as I love Hendrix' version.
