No. They can be broken by environmental issues (excess vibration, heat, etc.), but that's not usual.

Bare Knuckle makes a great EVH style pickup - the VHII, if you can find one. Not sure where you are located though.

Funny thing is how does one know these aren't tone zones, or any other dimarzio pu for that matter

The black baseplates and the 4-conductor wiring is indicative of an Axis pickup.
