OK you knuckleheads (sorry, couldn't resist), I want another SR4, OK? I used to own a nice one in white/tort/rw and a Sterling pearl blue/black/rw, sold 'em both (doh - I miss that Sterling !). Long story cut short, now my only MM bass is a lovely SR5 that is staying with me, no arguments. But I yearn for another SR4. Here's the situation: out here in the land of Oz downunder, there is a 30th anniversary NOS in my local crud shop sitting waiting for the right owner to come along - it's been there over a year and the price is going down.... The price is right, very nice, not significantly higher than a standard SR4. So, what's the dilemma, I hear you ask? Should my "one and only" SR4 be a heavy mahogany mutha, or should I go for a nice, lighter ash or sunburst beauty? The 30th is a killer tonally, but she is HEAVY !!!! The doofus shop {think Guitar Center, Oz style} hasn't bothered to set it up properly cause they don't know how or care so it sits unloved....but I know I can make it just right with a twist of the truss rod. OTOH there's a nice sunburst/rw number light as they come that is luvverly to play. So, should I jump on the 30th? How good is it really. Come on, tell me honestly.

I guess I can always get another "ordinary" Ray down the track. But I want to gig with it, not look at it in the case. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But will it break my back over a 4 set gig?

Bottom line, if you could only have one SR4, would you go for a 30th?

Actually, honestly, get that 30th while you can! There will always be another nice differently coloured one, but the 30ths will be harder to find...

I don't think weight should be your deciding factor. The thing I've found, especially when playing gigs, is I have so much adrenaline running through me I don't even notice the weight. And what is it, a pound or two at most?

For me it's all about the tone and sustain. So as much as I love my buttercream, there's nothing like the mahogany string through body of my 30th.

Go buy it, man. This bass will stay with you forever.

if you have the chance.. take it!! it wont come back ;)
if you find 2, buy em both!

its not heavy at all.. heavy is those 70'ies les pauls.. i swear they must weigh 40 pounds :D

the state of the bass should get ya a better price.. the less love, better for you..

MrM

ps: did i say you should buy it? if not.. DO IT!

I`ve been on the fence with a 30th and a HH SR4 Dargie. It looks like the 30th is gonna win. It`s a hard choice since both are rare and will become collectable, (although mine will not be a collectors item) but the chance of ever seeing another Mahogany body on a SR4 are much more rare than a cool color.

Just do it already, We`ll take the plunge together!! :D

Richard, you know that if I was still living in Adelaide I'd put you in an arm lock and march you into the shop personally. Great bass, do it! The lesbians in your dance band will be so impressed with the tone that they might even put on a private show for you.
