I've been reworking alot of my gear, even my pedalboard. I'm trying to decide on which pedals HAVE to be on my board. I have two definites, a Korg Pitchblack tuner, and a Ernie Ball Wah.

To help me figure it all out, I thought I'd pose a slightly hypothetical question to the group.

If you could only have 6-8 effects pedals on your board, what would they be?

I used to be on that road, but I've recently ditched the pedal board in favor of effects processors. What I did have was:

1. Tuner
2. Wah
3. Volume Pedal
4. Overdrive (Normally a tubescreamer)
5. Chorus
6. Delay

That's about it. I'm using TC Electronics processors right now, so I sold all my pedals in favor of one singular unit.

I have five, so this should be easy. My tuner is stand alone.

In order, guitar to amp:

1. Wah
2. TS-808 on all the time
3. TS-9 kick in for solos
4. BOSS DD-3 to split signal to stereo delay, dry to one amp, wet to another
5. Morely Flanger on wet line to add some modulation to the wet side.

Notice a pattern in these first three answers?......

my tour board is alot smaller than my local show board.

1 Budda Wah
2 Korg PitchBlack Tuner
3 Fulldrive 2
4 BJFE HBOD (soon to be replaced by MP SHOD)
5 Ernie Ball Volume
6 Boss DD5 AM modded (or maybe a boss ce-2...)
7 Eventide Time Factor
8 Carbon Copy or DE7 (depends on the mood)

cutting to six, i've have to drop number 6 or 8, but i'd be grumpy. and the age old problem of the lack of my SBEQ is still a problem, but if it gets stolen I'll be grumpy as all hell every night all tour.

I Refuse to play pedals that aren't true bypass. Kind of a pet peeve. Why get EBMM caliber tone to have it sucked by non TB pedals? Joe Bodenhamer makes a killer T808 clone that's TB. Only OD I played.

1. ISP Decimator Noise Reducer
2. Delay (preferably my T.C. Nova Delay)
3. Dunlop 535Q Wah
4. Volume Pedal (preferably Ernie Ball VP Jr.)
5. Tuner
6. T.C. Nova Modulator

Though I would trade all of that in for the T.C. Electronics Nova System!

Well, I'm not really that much of a "pedalboard guy", but so far, I'm only using 4 or 5:

1. Ernie Ball Volume Pedal
(2. Ernie Ball Wah)
2. Analogman Chorus
3. Xotic BB Preamp/RC Booster
4. Moogerfooger 104Z Analog Delay (in the loop of a 1x12" Lonestar Classic combo)

i recently did a similar exercise to make myself a practise rig but i made mine with 4 effects pedals plus tuner:

korg pitchblack
dunlop wah
vox satchurator
sovtek small stone
mxr carbon copy

worked a treat.

since then however, i've decided to scale down my rig so i'm selling my TC Electronics G-system and will replace it with a Nova System so i will no longer need a practise rig.

Nova system is similar in size to the G system isn't it? No more spill over :(

I have a pretty simple and straightforward set-up but I suppose it depends on the style of music you are playing.
Personally, I use:
  • Blackstar HT-Dual (although I have been substituting a 'Rox of Bock' clone I made)
  • Modded Boss EQ GE-7
  • Boss Tuner
  • Digitech Hardwire RV-7

That's it as along with my volume knob and my valve amp, it gives me my clean, crunch and solo sounds :D

1. EB Volume
2. Turbo-Tuner (Strobe Tuners by Sonic Research - Turbo Tuner Home Page)
3. Bad Horsie II Wah
4. Footswitch for my amp
5. Boss CH-1 Chorus
6. Boss DD-5 Delay

And if I could have one more than that, I'd probably have a Decimator or NS-2 or something like that.

As my rig stands right now, my pedalboard consists of 3 items: G-System controller, expression pedal, volume pedal.

On my pedalboard right now:

EB Volume Pedal
EB Wah
Boss Tuner
Fulltone Fulldrive2
Visual Sound H2O (Chorus & Echo)
Fulltone Distortion Pro
Ibanez TS9DX
Ibanez Analog Delay

The Ibanez pedals and the Distortion Pro get thrown on and off, but I couldn't live without the first 5...

My ts808 is true bypass Keeley mod
My wah is true bypass
Boss pedals have very good buffering
So do the tube screamers for that matter

My board actually has 9 pedals but I wish I could reduce that by one.

Pitchblack Tuner>Barber Tone Press Compressor>Barber Dirty Bomb>MI Audio Blues Pro>MI Audio Crunchbox>Boss Pitch Shifter>RetroSonic Phaser>Hardwire Chorus>Boss DD20

As you can see I have 3 dirt pedals. The Dirty Bomb just arrived and has replaced a Direct Drive (maybe temporarily). I wish I had one less dirt, but they are all very different even though each crosses the others territory. I play in an early 80's classic rock band and almost feel the next for 3 or 4 dirt pedals to delve into the sounds the songs need.

^^^^ I'd say that would be tough to slim down to just 6 to 8 pedals. Your switching foot must get a heck of a workout on that board!!

^^^ not really just lots of dirt options....thats why i posted the pic....for me a Tubescreamer type OD isnt enough ...so i have fuzz and distortion and overdrive and a lot of fun ...its kind of addictive ...i just LOVE pedals ...i am slimming down the herd a bit now ...if they dont play well live ...then they go! hahaha

have fun in your search for dirt and tone ...i did and do!
