The D-Sonic on my JP was installed with the blade closest to the bridge (it's Pre D-Sonic and the previous owner had it installed that way), and I finally got motivated to turn it around to the standard orientation...... nice quick job I thought.

Nope.

There's not enough PUP lead for me to turn it around, as it was trimmed to length for the blade-to-bridge installation. (D'oh !)

So my question is :

Is it possible to install a totally new PUP lead, rather than lengthening the existing one with additional lead (therefore avoiding joins) ?

I've got no problems with soldering and installation - I've switched a fair few pickups before, but I've never taken one apart.

What happens inside where the lead enters the base/mounting plate ?
Can I just take the baseplate off and install a totally new lead ?
(I figure it's going to resin / wax filled behind there, so I thought I'd ask rather than fly into taking the baseplate off)

Is it worth the trouble, or should I just extend the existing lead ?

Thanks in advance.

Dizzy - I don't know the answer to this.

Let it stay on the forum for a while to see if you get an answer.

If ya don't, PM me and I'll put you in touch with a friend who makes pickups from scratch - he'll have an answer for ya.

Just extend them solder them that then for extra measure put a little heat shrink tubing around your connections

I love modders...they never think that they are wrong and rarely think about keeping the ability to return to stock.

Bp, here's the "two" things I think about when I'm modding:

1. Should I, and do I really want to do this???

2. And, I want to be ABSOLUTELY sure I can return this thing back to the way it was before I got ambitious, without ANY indication that it had been temporarily changed!!!!

Otherwise I'm going to "Cry me a River". And, boy has that river flowed in the past.

Thanks BP,

Extend I will.
My job will be neat and heat-shrunk, I just wanted to avoid extra joins if I could get away with it.

SPUD,

Thanks for the kind offer....... but I'll just extend the original lead.

Dizzy-

Just solder the extra length of wire to the lead as Poppa says. There's no downside, there's very little current flowing through the lead and the resistance of a good solder joint is pretty much nill.

The only thing worth doing if you're doing a long extension is to use some shielded wire so you can keep the noise level down. If it's a short run then no worries, and the MM cavities are all sprayed with shielded paint anyway.
