So I've just ordered my SKB Bass Safe for next month's NYC trip, and wanted to know (once, and for all) the rule-of-thumb on detuning/not detuning your bass for cargo travel.

It gets mighty cold in the cargo area. On my last trip to Detroit (May), my bass came off the conveyor belt near-freezing. That's got to wreak havok on the neck!

Any thoughts/input?

I'm pretty sure Jon has spoken on this before, and I belive that you are to leave it tuned up. EBMM ships basses at all times of the year, into all kinds of climates and they always ship them tuned to the best of my knowledge. I think I've been told you might do more damage by loosening the strings.

Thanks guys! I'm a lot more at ease about traveling with my beloved Bongo now.

Hey Tommy ~ is there going to be an East Coast hook-up with some of the Forumites the week before Thanksgiving?

It's true that I can't make it up there before the 23rd (or really really late on the 22nd) but you might consider meeting up w/o me- Dave LaRue is playing some gigs up that way the previous week, probably would be worth checking out:

I'll be arriving at JFK around the time Dave fires up his Ampeg (NYC gig).

FAA Rule for Musicians

If you would like to carry your bass onto the plane, you can. According to an FAA rule, if you use your instrument to make a living, the airline must allow you to carry it aboard. This might be preferred than have it in the cargo section - all by it's lonesome self.

Good point. No matter how safe a bass might be in its bass safe, how can you be sure that the bass in the safe will arrive at the same time and place as the player?

I think that some of the more experienced folks making a living with their instruments will tell you otherwise about carrying onboard now days.

I think the rules changed after 9/11

I'm inclined to side with tk on this one...who wants to bring their axe in a gig bag, just to be told there's no choice but to check it or bail on the flight?

Not me.

Cool! Leave a number with your message...I keep my cell phone shut off at work (poor reception in the building).
