Aurora Alert!

Massive Solar flare this morning, due to reach Earth in the next nine hours (ETA Mar 8, 0630 UTC) will cause a major geomagnetic storm. Strong auroras expected, could be visible to anyone with clear, dark skies, possibly as far south as UK and Ireland and certainly most of Canada and Northern America. Significant geomagnetic storm already under way from the solar flare two days ago.

Keep your eyes open!

I thought the name of your band was Northern Lights, haha!

People tend to thing of nation-wide/world-wide disasters as things like nuclear (note, not nuke-U-lar?!!?) attacks, terrorist attacks, rising sea levels, and even hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. But a strong solar flare could knock out entire electrical grids, and bring communication and supply chains and utilities to a grinding halt immediately. Grocery stores would then be depleted in 3 days without new supplies coming in, and people get violent after just a few days with no food or clean water.

Just something to think about. Make sure you have LOTS of water and a good amount of canned food on hand. Full disclosure: I do not currently have water or canned food prepared.

Sorry to be so morbid, just want to make sure there are other musicians to jam with in the post-apocalyptic world!

Auroras were seen across much of the northern US, even as far south as Kansas. Check our spaceweather.com for photos.
More strong activity possible over the next few days, so keep your eyes open.

No matter where you are don't forget the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter. They'll be at there closest over the next few days - impossible to miss, they'll be the two brightest things high in the western sky after sunset! If you can hold binoculars steady enough, you can make out that both planets are showing disks, rather than points of light like stars. Jupiter will also show some of it's four brightest moons.

If you have a clear view low to the western horizon, you might be able to spot Mercury poking through the sunset sky. On the other side of the sky, reddish Mars and Saturn will be possible too. Five naked eye planets in one evening! Again, in binoculars, both of them are clearly not points like stars are.

Wow! Mr M, I'm packing my bags!

ALERT - Strong Auroras may be viewable over UK and Ireland, Norway, much of Sweden and Finland tonight, Monday 12th of March. If you are in north or north western Europe tonight, get away from city lights and you might be in for a show!

I got to fly through the aurora a couple of days ago. If my calculations are right, I should have absorbed enough radiation to have super-powers.
